Checking in from interstate 80 just across the Iowa line. Man, was eastern CO and Nebraska exciting! image-263758978.webp With a set of sliders splayed across the back of the truck where I would otherwise sleep, I had to stay at Motel 6 last night. Well they were nice enough to leave the light on for me, I could've done without the handful of fleas that jumped up on my legs this morning. Definitely find a place to set up the tent tonight! While the truck drives great with the new lift and alignment, and looks the biz with the bumper hanging off the back, the days of 17 mile per gallon seem to be over. With the cruise control set between 75 and 78 mile-per-hour, the last two tanks of been right at 14.8 mpg. Here's the best part of Iowa! image-2756677601.webp Next stop is in four hours or so at Walcott CB, right off interstate 80, to grab an antenna and coax cable so that I can move the CB set up over from the 4runner when I get home. For those of you who may be wondering, it is indeed pure aural bliss listening to the iPod play through a tape deck connection played through 14-year-old OEM speakers!

A few quick questions for those who might know:

Is there nighttime illumination behind the set of controls where the diff lock is to the left of the steering wheel? I may have a few burnt out bulbs in that area.

There is a blank cover between the sunroof controls and the rearview mirror. In my forerunner this area is a sunglass holder. Do they sell a piece that goes in here to make any use of this space ?

Why would I not want the center diff to be locked while in 4 lo?

San Diego cruiser- that's the part I don't understand. Why is that essential when driving over that sort of terrain?

So you can turn more easily. With the center locked, things start binding up when you are not driving on dirt.

The vent window switch icons light up. The differential switch doesn't, at least on mine it doesn't. The panel you mention should have a removable small square cap. The panel flips down by using a small flat blade screwdriver to pry it down. There is a metal bar inside that you can mount a garage door opener on. Remove the square cap, align the garage door opener button with the hole & close it up, you have a poor mans version of the "home link" garage door opener... :D

Crap! Just got on I 80 in Indiana and the total toll is going to be $33!

I'm going to have to call Mr. Lou and cancel those brand-new fancy hood struts I ordered earlier today!

If you were on C-470 in Denver be prepared to be bent over. I got hit with $73 worth of "license plate tolls". Along with a nice letter from the emissions people that scan your car as you drive by. I thought it would be funny to floor it by the meter, they thought not.

are you serious? even for an out of stater!?

I'm home!!!

3,457 miles and $853.20 of gas later...

Should have just enough time to clean it out, clean it up, install the CB, dump the runningboards and load the family back up to leave first thing tomorrow morning for the overland workshop in VT!

Tolls - I would think so.

The emissions check points are only there to test and allow you to skip a trip to the test station at registration renewal time. If you pass twice within a certain period of renewal you can just send them a check instead of making a trip to the test station. They won't fine you if you fail though.

Guys - I need to do a quick and dirty CB install for tomorrow morning. I've got the center console apart....right at the shifter and t-case shifter. Anyone know if one of those wires down there is constant power?

Thanks!

None that I'm aware of. You could try a fuse tap into the main fuse box. However, is suggest running a wire directly to the battery. Cb's draw at least a few amps of power...

One of the wires in there feeds the outlet that is inside the center console armrest. I can either tap into that or just buy a cigarette lighter plug, tie the ends of the CB box into that and then plug it into the socket. That is probably easiest. I have a Cobra 75 so the wiring is pretty simple!

SDC - how did you run the antenna wire/coax cable from the tire carrier into the cargo area?

I ran a positive and a negative into the cab, put 9006 headlight connectors on the power cables, and CB cables. I tucked the antenna cable down by the seat controls. When I'm on the trail, and I need the CB, I simply plug it in. When I'm on the road, it's out of the way, and not taking up space.

I do need to get a Cobra 75 WX ST...that is the greatest compact CB I have seen.

Edit: I ran the antenna cable along the driver side. You can pop the entire interior up enough to run the cable. The cargo panel has clips along the top. I simply pulled back on mine. The door kick plate pops off easily, peel the carpet up. The cover over the seat belt pops off as well (B pillar) to get under the carpet. Or, if your really short on time. Just pull it straight thought and not care!

If you lift up your rear cargo carpet next to the passenger wheel well, you will see a rubber grommet that you can poke a hole in to run your antenna coax out to your bumper... My out can climb under you truck and see the grommet too...

oh. I thought he was saying he got tickets for not passing emissions on the fly. we don't have testing here in Michigan so I was about to protest that my Michigan played truck would be tested...

Just spoke with Beno and he is helping with a bunch of little things that need sorted out with the truck.

Can't send photos via private message, so these pictures are for his reference.
