I'm going to buy a 60 but I'm undecided to go with gas or diesel. I have a friend who has a pretty nice fairly stock gas powered 60 that I was planning on buying and adding a few things to. I'm interested in the bio thing though and wonder if I should start with the diesel now or buy my friends run it until it gives up and then put a diesel in. What do you guys think?

Howdy! Diesels were not available in the 60 series in the US. They are up in Canada, but a little hard to find here in the states. Buy your friend's rig, and then start lining up the goodies to swap in a diesel. John

Sure would be easier and cheaper in the long run to start with diesel. Diesel conversions can get expensive.
The big question is IF you can find one. Like stated above, hard to come by in the US. I've heard if they are going to be anywhere in the US, the PNW would be the place to look.

The big plus to doing a conversion, you can pick the optimal drive train, Have a more modern turbo diesel and 5 spd.

you can fly down and buy my HJ60, then drive it back to the States. Not only do you get a great truck with OME suspension and a snorkel for the bargain price of $10.5K, but you get an *adventure*.
I'll even include GPS coordinates. Heck, I'll preload the entire trip into a Garmin eMap and include the eMap and a 12v cable. For FREE.

Probably the biggest adventure would be figuring out how to get it into the USA (legally). I think I've still got NV plates from my fj60 that I would be happy to throw in for free... but that doesn't make it legal.

Gas vs Diesel

Even with the cost of diesel these days, if I had a choice, I'd rather be running diesel. Guy in Houston, not far from here had a 60 with a blown engine he was trying to get rid of for 800 bucks. I was so-0-0 tempted. But the crew chief here at the hacienda said something had to go before something new arrived. There's too much I need to do to the current rig, and its a good machine. But if you could find a cheap 60, without tons of rust, and drop in a early Dodge Cummins. One without all the electronics. I think that woould be a killer machine. Probably run forever.

Smoking deal but the real adventure would be driving it through Guatemala.

or, 3rd choice, you can buy a gas that will run on petrol, or lpg, lpg is about 2 bucks cheaper than gas by the gal. and it burns super clean, check my rig in the classifieds, make me an offer!;)

IMO Go for a diesel if you can! suits a cruiser well. Better milage, better offroad, less likely to fail, more reliable, better in deep water etc etc.... the only reason to go for a petrol (except availability) is power/speed.. A 2H turboed or 12HT would be fast enough though.

It's funny though that you americans say gas and the rest of the world calls it petrol (benzine) Lpg is not petrol! It's liquid propane GAS!

It's all made from petroleum though!

Very true! Rust, rust, rust.... that should be your main concern with buying a 60. If your friend's is rust free and being offered at a bargain price, snap it up. Even with diesel fuel being more expensive I'd agree that it'd be a better way to go. However If I were you, I'd seriously check out Kitb's propane powered 60!

Buy Diesel run it on vegetable oil

I wish I could find one...:crybaby:

however I just picked up a FJ62 today :steer: will all the fixens I will post some pics of my two boys when I get back from picking it up

My next conversion will be a Hydrogen assist :bang: My friend who teaches at a local university, he and I have been :bang: working :wrench: on a fj system we have already been able to produce hydrogen with a 60amp alternator so figuring the vacuum hoses has been :bang: be a challenge

I wish I had a Diesel to work with but they are too expensive here :deadhorse: in the states...

I am moving to Washington State so I will be on the hunt for a Diesel and a propane to complete my fleet...

have a gr8 day

If you buy a 60 or 62, consider checking out the OM617 thread in the diesel section. 4x4Labs has just completed an adapter that would allow you to run the MB 5 cylinder turbo diesel (awesome, long lived engine) in front of a variety of toyota trannys. If I read the post correctly. I'm seriously considering selling my 80 : (, and buying a 60 to later swap one of those into. I think it would be easier/cheaper all around.

I would buy a diesel on the "cool" factor alone... !!!
Those are rare rigs and purrr like a nice kitty down the road....

I don't know if Guatemala is any worse than any of the other Central American countries. You need to be alert everywhere.

I'm just a little partial to diesels!

If you don't mind the bizzaro world steering, you can wing on down to Florida for the ultimate 2H powered rig that's back up for sale...:hillbilly:

Yes diesel cost more than gas but the better fuel mileage still makes it a bit less expensive to run (22 mpg vs 16 mpg).

Finding a rust free LHD diesel 60 will be next to impossible. Finding a 60 diesel is not. It just depends on how much time you are willing to wait for one to become available. They can be found but it will take time.

If you don't mind RHD, they are becoming easy to find

Finding a rust free 60 body to transplant on your HJ60 is not too difficult.

But, if you have to have one right now and want to spend 4 times what one is worth, we can talk :bounce:

Make that 19 MPG vs. 11MPG for city driving, and check out Lynchmob's diesel 62 on sale for a great price in the "Vehicles" section.

I get 22 mpg, fairly consistently with my HJ60. Highway, around town, it's about the same.

However, 22, 19 11, 16 it's all numbers and everyone driving styles are different.

Diesel

I have an 86 FJ60 with a 13B-T conversion 5 speed (swap from a Canadian BJ74) it gets anywhere from 24-28 mpg depending on the where and how I drive it. While diesel is slightly more, it clearly gets the best fuel mileage of the vehicles at my house. My next step for this vehicle is a WVO conversion, accumulating the parts now but the build will be several months away. I work from home at times but my commute about three days a week, is still more than 135 miles round trip. I had to sit on eBay and monitor the vehicles being sold for almost six months before I found this one in Idaho, my challenge was getting it back to North Carolina. Tough to find one in the states unless it is in the FJ40 line (BJ40,42,41,45 etc) really older than I wanted to make the daily commute. I had a great FJ 40 at the time, great woods truck but would literally beat you to death to drive it anywhere.
