After a long drive there is a burning rubber smell, any idea what this might be ?

that will smell like burning rubber ?

It means you've got a turbo charged FZJ80 and a lead foot :D . Actually Rick's idea is pretty good. I've never noticed a burning rubber smell, but have smelled the "heat" from the cats on a hot day.

My wife complains about it especially when I park in the garage. She says the car smells like "fire" but your comment of a burning rubber smell is right on. This is mostly noticeable for several weeks after lubing the driveshafts.

You can climb under there and usually wipe off the areas that have the splatter.

Mmmm, so that's what it is...I've been looking at my tires non-stop. Landtank - you da man!

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone. I had the same smell pop up a couple of weeks ago but I think mine is coming from a small leak from one of the oil pans.

Another common cause of a burning rubber or plastic smell is a piece of road trash flying up and sticking to part of the exhaust system. This happened to our Honda minivan and freaked my wife out for about a week until we discovered what had happened. (plastic grocery bag melted to muffler)

I had my once a year exterior detail last week (after hunting trips to the woods and swamp). I smelled something similar, just figured it was various cleaning supplies that got into the air vent.

I realized after a day or two that they spray painted the tow metal pieces that hang down beside the cats (rock guards?). Some of the overspray got on the cats and exhaust. That paint burning off smells similar to burning rubber.

I notice it when it rains or snows. Only when I park it in the garage. If it really starts to bother me, I put it outside and forget about it.

True - I also seem to notice it more in the winter on the snow as well - so I was wondering if it was related to the snow as well - not sure how. Then again, I have recently lubed the shafts and just had a full 'rust proofing' on the truck, so lots of stuff is burning off in the last day

Cheers, Hugh
