Got finished installing the bumper this morning... ****py part is, I messed up big time putting my winch onto it and wired my pos and neg backwards  So now I gotta' fiddle around with the winch and see what damage I did... errrrrr. Once I figured it out, and rewired the winch, it spooled in for about 2 seconds, then nothing. Now I only get "click" when I control it from the remote... any guesses?

Otherwise, the bumper came out nice I think.

Congratulation for your front-bumper! nice job mate!:cheers:

Great write up!

And I think I have the same bumper on my Cruiser. I might just have to learn so fab skills to copy your work.

Where did you get your D rings from? I just ordered some and they are made in China. Not sure if that is a good thing or not when it comes to steel.

Hi
Looks great. Very inspiring to go out and do one of my own as a buddy is teaching me to MIG weld. I do have a couple of newbie questions though. Was this bumper originally for an FJ? I ask because you make no mention of holes for mounting it to the vehicle. Can you give a more laymans description of the tubing? This way I get the right stuff. Thanks. Let us know how you make out with the winch repair.
Regards
Jerry

I got mine from a machinist in Colorado Springs, he makes a lot of the high steer components for some of the biggest names in the business...

His ebay name is RMQM... for Rocky Mountain Quality Machining. 20 bucks for the pair, nice big units too. :D

Jerbear, welcome bro!

You got it right, I started with a bumper already designed for a fj40, so all the mounting locations were already in place for mounting to the stock frame horns. That said, a lot of guys use tubing and weld plates on the top and bottom to mount them to the frame horns. Others take the shackle mounts and pass them through the bumper back to the frame and bolt them in (this is the strongest method too).

As for the tubing I only used one piece of tubing for the hoop, and it was 1.5" round tubing HREW (hot rolled electrically welded) with a .125" thick wall. The main bumper is more like a channel, but it was bent into shape, not extruded. Any beefy tubing will work for you...

Look up Hawkdriver on this board, he has some great bumpers that he sells (or used to sell?) not sure if he is still making them or not, but they are quality and mount a bit differnt than this one. I simply had this bumper in my garage, just sitting there, so I used it to make what you see here.

Hope that helps man! :D

sick bumper

hey man, think you could fab something like that for...oh, a 1997 toyota camry? it'd be nice in Atlanta traffic. :hillbilly:

I don't know which bumper I like more, the front or the back one with the tire carrier. They both came out SICK!!!

Drew-

Have you figured out what happend to the winch when you swapped the wires? Any major damage?

Jeff

no i was thinking more like the opposite side to the front
and front as in where the tow points are.

I am not an expert welder by any means but I have been welding bronze , stainless steel , aluminium for about 15+ years and I really think I would have beveled the block at least 3/8" If doing a butt-weld . The amount of potential stress to be put on that block during winching could tear that off. I would really suggest cutting out slots and resessing the blocks. That way you could weld from the front and the back..
not trying to step of toes or anything, just a suggestion.:)

It takes alot of amperage to really melt such a mass
