Does anyone know anything about the Warn VR10000 Series Winch. It is supposed to be for "heavier" rigs and can pull 10,000 lbs., but is listed as "entry level". It states that it is for someone that wants extra power without breaking the bank. I found an online store that has it with a 100' 3/8 synthetic rope for $829 with free shipping.
I'm just trying to figure out the best option for the 80. The Warn XP 9500 that was on my old 80 is about $1400.

The VR series winches are Warns answer to compete with the very competitive market their premium series is the M series that sells for much more but worth the coin IMO the only complaint that I had was the solonoids which are easily upgradable now. In recent years I think Smittybilt has put together the best 8 and 10lbs packages XRC series with synthetic rope for the price and those I talked to and read about were happy with the performance. You can search the net you can find some good deals on them. For the weight of your 80 I suggest at least a 12K or if you go with a 10 get 150FT of rope and snatch it to avoid overworking the winch. I replaced my M12000 with a Titan 12K only because it wouldn't fit my new bumper but I'll admit it don't have near the balls of the M12000 and I'm sure it won't last as long either. Woody and others here in the club said the Harbor Badland winch will do the job from what I've seen so far so good bang for the buck.

the rule of thumb that I`ve always used is what ever you are going to use the winch on weight is then double that
so if you total rig weight fuel gear bumpers sliders people ETC ETC is say 6K then ya need a 12K
why you ask cause why are you pulling cable to start with you are stuck in mud behind a rock etc takes a lot more to move ya.

remember the capacity pull on most winches is on the first layer of line it drops off as you fill the spool.

Talked to Jerome Weber this afternoon he was an active member for several years with the club until he retired and then went back to work. He shared a story of how well the old cruisers are built. While out for a stroll in his 78 the front wheel came off at 40 mph slamming down on the front axle and shaving the rotor until it had a flat side to it. A farmer found the tire and wheel a 100 yards away completely fine they bent the backing plate straight found two lugs and borrowed two from the other wheels tightened the wheel down and he drove it to a local mechanics shop. The mechanic was amazed it was driveable after slamming to the ground. Jerome can't figure out how the wheel lugs got so loose a theft attempt or the last shop to work on it didn't tighten them. Glad to hear he kept it together and walked away without a scratch. Some other good news he wanted to share was he picked a white 2013 FJ with the Offroad package and he really likes it. I expect we'll be seeing him again soon :)

I bought mine with Alex at Master Pull he was a vendor here on Mud at the time and contributed to some of the rope discussions here on Mud. I definitely believe in patronizing our Mud vendors and the innovative individuals who come up with great solutions to improve our rigs it's what makes this forum the best place for fellow enthusiasts to grow and learn. I haven't ran into Steve yet but thanks for the heads I'll keep him in mind when shopping for my next needs :)

I would have thought more highly of him if he would have just offered me free shipping. In the end he still got my business but I felt better saving the $10 on shipping :)

Academy on Ambassador received an ammunition shipment and they have plenty right now. I'm not sure how long it'll last.

I hope its done right and looking forward to seeing how the truck does in a real world environment start logging some towing and commuter miles to see what it's like to live with it. I think it can be a big win for quite a few truck fans that want a diesel in a light duty application with the improved mpg's :)
 
Yeah thats along the same lines I was thinking, 30 MPG on a daily basis, but enough FT LBS to tow 12000 lbs when needed(or course it better have enough brakes), sounds great on paper.
