A little background on me, I like things with wheels, enjoy taking things apart and sometimes, if I'm really focused, I put things back together. I spent most of my youth tinkering on aircooled VWs and in my mid 20's bought an 83 FJ60, loved it but needed something that would turn better mpg and could cruise at 75mph for commuting. Selling the FJ60 led me to a 94 SR5 T4R 5spd and a few 80 series Landcruisers. I've always wanted an FJ40 but things never quite lined up for me until this past summer. I was precepting a young nurse in the ER and we were talking about cars and she mentioned her dad has a "land rover" sitting in the yard. Early this month, she texted me and said her mom wants the Land Rover out of the yard. Turns out it is a 72 (claimed to be) Landcruiser that needs a lot of love. Enough with the words, lets look at pictures!

The PO was kind enough to put air in the tires for us before we winched it up onto the trailer. Poor guy slipped and almost fell on the ice quite a few times during the process.

We drug it home day after an ice storm left about an 1/8-1/4" of ice on everything and it was about 25 degrees. My helper had worked an overnight shift in the ER and managed to do an awesome job of helping even though he had been up for over 24hrs, excitement of a new project!

@brian already busted my chops about it on the Keystone Cruiser page ;) . Thank you!

I know very little about these trucks except they are freakin' badass. I have a lot to learn and plenty to do.

1) oil/fluids change
2) tune-up
3) rebuild the carb (it's a Weber)
4) brakes work fair
5) get a title (PO lost it)
6) assess the rot and either repair or deal with it.
7) un-**** the wiring
8) drive it
9) get a proper fuel pump
10) replace the dipstick with the correct one

*edit* 1A) flip the bezel!
1B) ditch the damn house key jammed in the ignition!

9) if the paint job is original, preserve it!

Seem your turtle may have been red before the overzealous green respray! Keep us update on the discoveries.
I have a "free" day tomorrow and am hoping to do a little work on it after I move some stuff in the morning.

The "paint job" is awful. Not as bad as some of the house paint roller beetles I've had in the past but geez man. I think the painter was drunk, high, didn't care or spent too many years huffing glue.

3) replace the carb (it's a weber).
Oh yeah? Webers were the hot thing for air cooleds, guess not here. Now I gotta find a replacement carb

That’ll keep you busy for a while! Keeping the plow?

Yeah, I looked up the meaning of precepting, you know, just in case 😂.

At this point, keeping the plow. The plow frame is welded to the 40's frame.

I met my girlfriend as a result of being her preceptor, what a ruckus that caused!

I'll wager the quarter panels under the diamond plate are...............perfect

One side looked "solid" on quick exam, the other side reminded me of Alpine Lace Swiss cheese.... Now I want a sandwich

Surprised no one has mentioned it's a 73 model not a 72. Advantage of you want to put something other than a three speed .
I saw an emissions sticker under the hood talking about "emissions requirements for 1973" which had me wondering. Thanks for the input. So, it's a 3spd on the floor? Currently it's stuck in 4lo and I haven't had any time to look into anything on it other than "ok, it's a landcruiser and I like it. Here's the money!"
