Wrenching newbie here. I am far better fixing an eyeball then an FJ40...easier I think. I am working with Extreme Vehicle Builders in Danbury trying to solve a brake height pedal issue. I searched the forum and assume they tried the easy fixes. The height differential between gas and brake is at least six inches or more. No way to just slide you foot over, you have to lift your foot and bend at the knee to engage the brake. PITA and probably a significant safety issue. The first several inches of pedal depression do not seem to engage the brakes, once the pedal is depressed 50% the brake engage and work just fine.

As anyone addressed this issue successfully? Was the 1976 FJ40 actually designed with this crazy differential between the two pedals?

Thanks in advance

There is an adjustment for the pedal height in the FSM, but what you describe sounds about right, except for the 50% until engagement. You might want to have your rear brakes adjusted.

The brake pedal height on my 76 is 8 1/2” from floorboard to top of pedal pad. Gas pedal pad surface is 5 1/8” off floorboard.

50% to get engagement isn’t right.

I'm wondering if your gas pedal is too low to get full throttle response.

If he is able to lower the pedal by lowering the U shaped threaded bracket (as shown in the manual above - little bit of thread will move the pedal more) and it still requires a bunch of travel before the brakes take effect the rod is not pushing the master in so therefore needs to be adjusted out. That is that adjuster behind the brake booster I mention above. I helped city Racer with the brake booster so I know there is very little space needed between the rod and the master. There is more travel at the pedal but little at the rod.

My brake pedal is at 8”, my gas pedal at 5.5” FYI. Brake and clutch are nearly the same height. The spec above (9.65” for my 74) is way high I’m happy with the 8” height.

See troubleshooting tip #1, item #2 in the doc I linked above.

There is an adjustment behind the brake booster as well. Sounds like the rod that pushes in needs to be adjusted out. Little adjustments go a long way FYI.

This is great info. I have 4 Cruisers running the City Racer booster. It’s a great product.

The ‘feel’ this latest one has is odd that I’m at least 4” off the floor when I smash the brakes as hard as possible. It kind of rolls to a stop.

The other ones I have will slam you forward. I’ll use this guide to baseline my current setup and see what I get. Thanks for the link
