When I park, pull the e-brake, and turn off the car, remove the key...my rear brake lights stay on? Any ideas. I did a couple searches and did not find anything.:hhmm:

make sure your return spring under the dash is still hooked up..

Dont know what year yours is but mine did the same thing ('75fj40) Found a little rubber bumper on the brake pedal was missising where it hits the brake light switch. Its just an on off switch by the brake pedal. I think youll find your problem in that area. I found a generic bumper at Lowes or Home vato and bought a few extras.

Reach down there and grab your brake pedal. Pull it away from the firewall and into the brake light switch. Does the BL's turn off? Did it move with some slight resistance? If so then your brake booster is dragging and might need to be replaced or lubed. Now, push the brake pedal into the firewall. Reach up there and push the BL switch in and out with your finger. Is there drag on the switch when you actuate it? If so then the switch is funky and needs replacement.

I will try and follow these directions, i thought it might be something on the e-brake, because it only does this when I pull the e-brake. Its parked right now with no e-brake and it's fine. I will report back, hopefully I can find what you are describing..

More than likely it is your brake switch hanging up. At least that was the problem on my vehicle. When I realized it was occurring, it had already heated the plastic lens to the point they started to deform. When I pulled the switch, the grease on the rod that turns the brake lights on and off had dried out and caused the rod to hang up. When I cleaned the rod I found more wear than I cared for and put a new switch in along with two new rear lenses. This was approximately 5-6 years ago and it has not occurred.

I fiddled with it a bit and now it's fine?

Queston mark indicates a what now state of mind.

Well, it's like this. You can ignore, dangerous because sooner or later you will forget to check your b. lights. Bye bye bat.. You can fiddle with it, not good because the problem will still remain.

Replace, ok, One hell of a fussy job. Use a stick between the brake pedal and seat to get the pedal out of the way. Good luck with the rest, You'll know why soon enough.

Adjust your switch. It is threaded into its mounting hole, your brake pedal probably isn't fully returning and keeping the switch depressed. I had the same issue. These are old rigs and take a bit of adjusting now and then.

^This.

The adjustment is very easy to do and will probably fix your problem.

I had the same problem. Every now and then the brake pedal would not return far enough to engage the light switch. If I pulled the pedal up, the light would go out. You can either adjust the switch with the screw or add a little bumper to the pedal arm to make it engage earlier. Same result.

Whens the last time you adjusted your drums? (assuming that you still have drums) if they are way off this can cause a low pedal which might prevent ur lights from going off.
