Box under driver's seat?

Picture quality is not great from my microfiche, but you can see the tool box was OEM from 03/69 to 09/72.

'72 was the final year. Under the passenger seat in places such as Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Made for tricky seat modifications though so was often removed by owners in the 80s and 90s.

I just love the fact that you are using a microfiche haha.
Just wish I had a better viewer. Advanced technology passed me by a long time ago. For a reference, we were required to take typing class in high school on manual typewriters, no computers. Sometimes the fiche is just easier this way.

Oh man... I have something new to obcess over!

Anyone got one or know where I can get one?!? That would be handy for all kinds of things. Tucked out of sight.
It's not that easy...the drivers seat mounts are way different than what you currently have.

Should have a retainer clamp for the screw jack. I keep a starter, and other spare parts in there + some other stuff. All bagged and padded so it doesn't rattle. Very handy IMHO. THAT is exactly what I had in mind! Perfect! Where can I find one?

Are they bolted in place?

The last week was chemically removing of poopoo, sanding, blasting, then replacing anything needed with new metal (like where previous owner mounted auxiliary lights on the front fenders and behind where the seat belts mount), then primered (in and out and bottom) and then bedlinered on the belly & floorpan for a Lifetime Warranty on rust & corrosion. Friday to paint & body. Monday to headliner. Wednesday to drivetrain drop in, Saturday - Saturday every week from then on.... Smile, drive, fish. Smile, drive, beach. Smile, drive, grocery store. Drive every day like it's my last day. NOT foot to the floor, but rather cherishing every moment for the rest of whatever time I'm blessed to have.

👍

Way different and not a great design, IMO. I had that box on my 1970 and the latches that held it closed and the seat in place were shot. Every time I nailed the throttle I almost fell over backwards in the seat. Much less safe than the later seat brackets are.

Not sure what later seat brackets you are referring to? Up to 9/72 the left seat was designed to be removed quickly with no tools. After that seats were held in with bolts. Of course those would be a much more solid installation. But if something breaks and doesn't get repaired that blame falls on the operator. When I bought a one owner 1970 FJ40 in 2011 one of those latches was broke. It was replaced.

I always like having some tools in a cruiser. If somewhere with the top and doors off it is nice to have a lockable storage that's out of sight. When I installed bucket seats from a 74 FJ40 in my 68 I modified the left front driver's seat mount to be outside the tool box and still have the lid and lock. On any newer than a 9/72 I sure wouldn't have the factory tool pouch inside an open 40.

Good to know.

Mine is a 1971 (made DEC of 1970) and it did not have the box under the driver's seat. I'll have to look to see if it bolts to the floor or has a quick release system. Thanks for the info.

I think the screw jack spring retainer clamp is riveted in place. I have never had issues with keeping the seat in place with the oem buckles up front and the cross pin rear mounts.
