i have less than 200 miles on a jim.c rebuild, new toyota fuel pump,filter,d.cap,button,points,plugs.vacumn holds around 17 at idle, fuel idle switch on carb has power to it when problem occurs, the problem is the cruiser will just die on me it does this cold, warm, choke open, choke closed, when its sitting at idle, and when im going 60 down the hwy, ever so often it will diesle after it dies but usually not, just dies on me,cranks back up then dies instantly, repeat couple times fires up may run perfect for 10miles or die again after 100 yards.idle mixture srew about 3 turns out from bottom.adjusted timing from vac gauge and ear, i have messed with mixture screw to lean out and run rich problem still present.when it is running it runs great.just finished a 2.5 bds lift ,and i cant even drive out of the yard!! please any advice to send me in right direction is more than greatly aprec.i have become consumed with this 74 fj40,1f i love it im just sick of not being able to drive it...

That doesn't sound like a fuel problem to me. Here are a few possibilities that you might want to consider. Bad condensor. Bad ballast on coil. Bad coil. Loose or corroded wiring to coil + or between coil - and distributor.

If your in the Atlanta area, there are quite a few Cruiser Heads who might be able to help you who are regulars on this board.

How does the float level look when it dies? Does the accelerator pump still squirt good? Try hot wiring the coil to eliminate fuse/ignition switch problems.

so far so good

replaced coil and resistor this morning so far so good, thanks for input.

Just dies? Just like if you turned the ignition switch off w/o any bucking spitting and coughing? If so, I would suspect an intermittent bad connection somewhere between the battery and the coil.
