I missed this warning by minutes but you aren't kidding! I would argue I was being responsible but man i'm still paying for it right now. The 1920 comes with the heat for sure but is smooth. The JJBowman takes the cake between the two overall for me. I would buy again

I've really enjoyed the Bowman. It is funny for folks that have grown up in this area, I guess the early days of the distillery it wasn't the best. So some folks still have that thought when consider buying it. Fortunately, I discovered it when it was good, so I'm sold.

I'm that way with Murlarkey. One of the owners frequents a bar that I do too when I'm in VA. He has been known to buy shots for everybody at the bar...shots of various Murlarkey products. I respect his generosity (or marketing scheme) but I kind of wince at times while drinking it.

I don't think I have ever seen that bourbon.

They definitely try to promote the crap out of their crap. It's a cocktail liquor at best, not a sipper

You're not missing anything. Their bourbon is barely aged and really harsh! Their "aged" was still way too harsh and did not have a good flavor profile. I haven't tried any of their liquor since 2017 when I was running a bar that was right up the road from them and we were trying to help promote their stuff. Worked well in the cocktail menu, but boy was it tough to take down neat.

Maybe they will be like Bomans in the future, although Bomans used to be considered rail...

A night in the woods and a trip to an ABC store in a different county.

Mmmm...Tripe A ten star. Good.

Have you had a chance to try these? That Belle Meade looks like an ass kicker.
Not under well controlled circumstances yet. Was camping that night. I do know that it lit my parched tastebuds on fire with the single sip I tried, so I left it alone. Tonight, at home, should be a much better test. The JTS Brown was a pretty decent bottle for what I think I recall as being inexpensive. Can't remember the price. There were 3 different Belle Meade's but I don't remember why I selected that one. I think it was $60 dollars?

Anyone tried Paul Jones Whiskey? Virginia ABC is doing a close out. Price is too good to be true if the whiskey is even half way decent.

I've got nothing....buy one and report back!!

Close out. $7 a fifth. Not holding out that it’ll be good straight.

If you've had enough before hand it will be.. lol

I challenge all you guys to Edward Liter hands! Duct tape a liter to your hands and you can take it off when you are done.

Game on. I am going to have “Paul Jones kicked my @ss” t shirts printed up for the first fifty participants (Not really).

And I am not tasting this fine caramel colored rarity without you guys in tow.

Not drinking it at this very moment :) but last night had a very nice pour of "Wilderness Trail" Rye. All of the Wilderness Tail bourbons/ryes are quite good - at least to my palate.

If you find yourself passing through Kentucky and happen to find a bottle of "The Old Pogue Distillery's" Rye, it's wonderful (unobtanium out of state as are most of the best small batch/distillery bourbons). You've got to go to the source to get them because we drink them before they have a chance to make it out of Kentucky.

Our go-to-manhattan bourbon (if you're into those) is the "Old Barton" 100 proof. Around here, it's $26 for a handle. Cheap, but surprisingly good. Also not terrible to sip neat in a pinch.

We've toured dozens of distilleries over the past several years, and had a blast.

I'm still new to Mud, and haven't got involved in the chat forum. When I saw that there was a bourbon thread, it seemed like a good time to get started chatting.

Take it easy.

Maybe off-topic, but I had the opportunity to have a couple really good Old Fashioned's the last few weeks. I'm hoping the Old Fashioned is the gateway drug to Bourbon for me.

Key to a quality Old Fashioned, I found out, is to not skimp on the bourbon.
  • At the Grove Park Inn, that we visited for lunch, the house bourbon is a unique blend Maker's Mark that they help create.
  • Also had a great one at H&F Burger in downtown Asheville. I asked for Basil Hayden's on that one.
  • I have been making them, as well. Just tried Yellowstone Select as it was on sale for $39.99 here in PBO.
Instead of muddling sugar, I have been putting a little bourbon in honey bottles when they are almost finished. Pretty nice way to do it, but not really old fashioned :)

@CharlestonG8R how was that stuff I gave you? I need a review I was thinking of getting some. On a side note I forgot how much taxes are added at ABC stores.... that bottle is almost $20 cheaper here!!!

Disappointingly, we haven't tried it yet... It would've been great last night since we had steak and watched a drama afterward. Will try to get a sip tonight. Admittedly, we rarely drink Bourbon/Whiskey/Scotch, so my opinion will likely be off the mark... I love Bourbon but after missing several football games in college (tailgating at FSU was a huge deal), or vomiting in the stadium (in the stands, actually), my friends steered me toward gin/vodka and I could keep the party going all night. If that makes sense.
