Bought my first 100 Saturday. This morning I got a P0011. This afternoon it went out. What gives?

Bought a 100 on Saturday (2006 LX470). Generally pretty pleased with it in that it's DEVOID of any hint of rust (TX car) and has no crash history.

But, driving it to work this morning, it threw a P0011. Looking it up, that's Cam position Bank 1 over advanced. So, I figured either the PO timed the engine poorly on timing belt swap, or the cam position sensor is failed.

... but then, driving home this afternoon, it went out mid drive. I can't really see how a timing issue could fix itself, and a failed sensor doesn't normally unfail, so now I'm thrown for a loop.

Is there a common issue that might explain this behavior?

i dont know much about VVTi, but i has something to do with that. Either the sensor is flaking out or the VVTi solenoid is going out
 
Guess I'll start with the sensor and see if she throws codes again.

Timing belt was done 40k miles ago, so seemingly they could have screwed up the timing...
 
Carefully inspect the wiring. It’s common for these wires to be misrouted during timing belt replacement.
 
So, the lights came back today-- and they brought a friend.

Now the park light on the gear display stays on when the car is in drive, at least currently....

I swear the cluster isn't that hazy IRL-- some sort of reflection artifact in the picture.

Any thoughts? No the intro to 100 ownership I was hoping for :P
 
Check that the wire housing block, is plug all the way in and locks (clicks). On VVT oil control valve.
Check timing marks, by peeking under both cam covers. T to cam marks, to harmonic balance (crank pulley) line pointing to plastic nub on lower cover. Or I (straight line) on cams, and 0 on lower timing cover.
Run 2 cans of BG EPR engine oil flush for 30 minutes, getting engine above 3,500 RPM for 10 minutes. Drain oil and replace oil filter (OEM), fill engine with approximately ~ 7qt of Mobil 1 5W-30.

Are OEM Denso cam position sensors are good as OE Lexus cam position sensors? Or are they factory seconds?

While Denso makes many parts for Toyota, a lot of them are not made to the same standards. IME, buying the Toyota part whenever possible is worth the extra cost. Check out Partsouq if you're not already familiar.

Is there a Toyota/Lexus equivalent to realoem.com for looking up part numbers?

I'm glad you replied promptly! I was confident enough that 19300‑50020 was correct that I had put in my order for it. But, per Partsouq's VIN based part diagram search, 9091905036 is what I actually need.

I feel like such a noob here, not knowing where to look up PNs and parts diagrams or having the diagnostic tools. Changing car brands has thrown me for a bit of a loop!

Thank you for the hand holding. Hopefully I become less useless soon :P

The sensor has been swapped.

Before investigating further, will wait to see if the most like solution fixed the issue.
