I bought this one: http://www.outbackimports.ca/consignment.html#c3

Used Carco in Blaine to import and now have it titled in Ak. It looks great, just like the pictures show, but the more I poke around the more rust I'm finding. s***... I now have an appreciation for the Eastern rust belt. Part of the frame in the back where the bumper attaches has holes in it. I'm afraid it's in the rust from the inside out mode. Well, I'll see what I can do to slow things down a bit. At least it's out of the salt now. Paid 5700 US, plus costs of getting it to AK. It's fun to drive and runs well...so far. I love the suspension seats. A more comfortable ride than my FJ62.

i like the colour, sorry about the rust.
i know of a couple very solid frames available if you need one.
i think Dan at 4 wheel has aftermarket quarters for 70 series...
i also have a 71 that i will be parting out one day if you end up needing more than just a bit...
cheers

Nice for you... I was looking for it ... but I found one closer from my home. Enjoy the susp seat !

Thanks Wayne, I'll make a note of this helpful info. The fenders, wheel wells and quarters are OK, but the inner supports that the quarters attach to in the rear are mostly gone. They're secured with a bit of good metal left, fortunately, for now. The body below the rear doors was the worst, despite looking fine to the casual observer. Also, the metal supporting one of the rear windows is quite rusty. I suppose that when the original wheel wells went, the salt and moisture on the roads got shot up into more of the inside. It's a shame that the guys doing the body work didn't do a more thorough and honest job of it. Instead of removing and/or treating the rust , they just covered it up with black paint.

to do a proper refurbishing of a body is nearly impossible. the best alternative is a replacment tub which can be properly treated before installing on the frame.
i try and warn folks that the eastern trucks (as well as BC trucks) as rust buckets. i have seen a couple that do not fit the typical profile but that is very rare. no matter what you do to steel the rust will come back sooner or later...
i have done refurbishings for years (check out www.crushersrule.com under restorations) and can feel for anyone that is tackling the dreaded rust issues.
if i can help just let me know.
cheers

Sorry to hijack the post.........
Wayne...I've crawled all over, under and sideways on my truck and the only rust I found is the couple small bubbles at the rear quarters. That being said I hate rust and am considering replacing the entire rear quarters just as a preventative measure. Could you hook me up with a number or name of this guy who may sell quarters? thanx :)

What did that black goop on the firewall end up being, 89Gashog? I remember there was a discussion on it a while ago, and it almost looked like there was oil on the firewall from the pics.

Congratulations on the purchase. I guess the price you paid wasn't too bad...sounds like some resto work in order, but definitely doable.

Thanks. The goop was the original owners' attempt at rustproofing with oil. It's all over the undercarriage and engine compartment so I need to steam clean the bugger or be overwhelmed by the fumes once it heats up. On a positive note, the rig has a fairly new radiator, starter and gas tank. Full on resto work will have to wait for now. I'll probably be hitting up some of you good neighbors in Canada for help on this in a year or two, when my pocketbook recovers. :grinpimp:

the good news is in a couple years there will be a few JDM bodies available to use.
i just bought a HJ61 from a gent with a blown tranny. he has sunk so much money into it over the last 8 months that he decided to cut his losses. really too bad, nice guy taken for a ride...
cheers

I could use the grey instrument cover if it's reasonable and in good shape. and a small piece of rubber for the apc gauge cluster we pm'd about. I can't find anything here worthy.

Staying at slickrock with the rising sun crew and proffitts

What do you mean in a few years? We've done that numerous times over with JDM's now. No bodies left around as evidence...:D

Congrates on the BJ70 89GASHOG. I am jealous about the suspension seats! It seems only some BJ74's came with them. You would have to modify the mounting area of the seats (cut away a bracket or two) to make them work on 74's that did not get them at the factory.

Headrests = Send Sheldon a note off list at gscruiserparts.com He has a bead on what we do and do not have in stock. I know we have front and rears, in grey. Not sure about brown.

Darn, now I am not the only one in AK. Just kidding :) Congradulations. Where you at? I'm in Fairbanks. Come June, I think, I will have had mine for a year, I nave the same problem with the rust. Will probably next year get a Japan body and put it on. I will try to be at this years meet and greet in Palmer (?).
