Boneyard Finds

I had a thought as I'm browsing though the pick-n-pull this morning. How about I make this a sticky, either on its own or linked under the FAQ, and we keep each other updated about our finds. Not just at the UPull, but any boneyard. What's the group say?

I like the suggestion. The big U-Pull-it on S. Broadway only kept that '94 FZJ80 for about 3 months before it got crushed. The last time I saw it there were a lot of usable (and valuable) parts still harvestable including a complete head and intake, complete rear axle & control arms, sunroof, rear hatch, and tailgate. ... all gone now. :frown:

Maybe communication between us will keep that from happening again.

Highly doubtful as we're all bunch of vultures :flipoff2:

I was at the U-Pull yesterday and had a severe case of sticker shock at the register. Knowing something was wrong I pulled up their online price sheet and compared the prices on the my receipt.

Folks, they have DOUBLED their prices, and from my receipt it appears to be across the board. For most things that is still reasonable, but I suspect that for smaller items a new part might be competitive.

Solid Axles at U-Pull

I was at the U-Pull today. There are three solid front axles there! Wasn't there somebody looking for a mini-truck axle recently?

A general observation. The lot to the north that usually had newer vehicles is closed. There were still lots of vehicles there, but a sign in their lot pointed everybody to the "gold" building. I didn't ask what was going on.

1979 mini-truck. Most of the axle was still there! Lockout hubs missing. Knuckles, spindles, and rotors there. No birfields or inners so the knuckles are pulled and ready to walk out.

1983 mini-truck. Most of the axle was there, including birfields and inners. The lockout hubs were pulled already and sitting in the dirt, so I took those :D

1982 FJ62! Involved in a front in wreck so the sheet metal is toast. Engine missing carb and alternator ... still had head (complete), block, mainfolds, power steering, upper tailgate but not lower. Brown inside and mostly picked over. Axle just missing lockouts. The handles were gone but the hub bodies were there. It looked like the cone washers stopped them. I took the bodies and pulled some IFS covers to make them complete. :grinpimp:

There were 6 Gen1 4Runners in the lot from 1986 to 1989. They were really picked over. Their printout listed seven, but the truck in row 20 was gone along with everything else in the row [smashed]. As I recall there was at least one 4cyl transfer case there in case somebody wants to double up.

Could you see customers over in the North lot? Maybe they consolidated staff to 1 building instead of two. I was there about a month ago and they do a good business in that North lot on weekends.

Nope, nobody there. They still had the signs up in the south lot telling folks not to proceed north.

Historically, this lot has only had 1990 and older trucks, and the other lot had 1990 and newer. I don't know if this will change.

If you are there and the fj60 has a front CV driveshaft, grab it. Don't make a special trip though.

Dang, that was a good part I should have snapped to. It's there, both shafts were there, though the rear has been speared by the forklift.

I went back today to get some of the more desirable parts off the FJ60, and it's gone.

I didn't look around too hard. Some notables are:

  • 1993 Gen2 4Runner, V6.
  • 199X 2WD Hilux, 22RE.
  • 200X Tacoma 4 door PreRunner, V6, rolled hard, there wasn't a straight piece of sheet metal on it. Not TRD ... no elocker. :crybaby:
  • 1983 Hilux 4x4 still there with front axle, 1981 not.
  • Lots of Gen 1 Hilux 2WD, 22R.
  • Several Gen 2 (1985+/-) Hilux 2WD, 22R.
  • Still six Gen1 4Runners, 22RE and 3.slow.

I looked down every row, plus I asked when I came in. They said they didn't have any LC's. I might go back next weekend for grins. I'm thinking of a new hobby, like collecting emblems off Toyota 4WDs and trucks. These are the ones I snagged today.

T-Toyota: grille emblem off 83 Hilux
Toyota: fender emblem off 81 Hilux 2WD
SR5: from tailgate on 93 4Runner
Toyota-4WD: fender emblem off 83 Hilux.

 I need to dig up the others and make a nice display case.

I forgot to mention there was a 84 turbo Supra. Most of the engine was there, but something was missing from the top of the plenum.

A Little Boneyard Story

Yesterday I went to the U-Pull for a little recreation. I had the lady print out a sheet for 86 4Runners, and asked about LCs (none). They had the six usual trucks listed, so I started at the far end and started walking the rows. I found an almost complete 1987 4Runner that wasn't on the sheet (it should have been!). It had the SR5 instrument cluster with the tach, and a clinometer! I pulled those first. As I was pulling the last of the clinometer's bits three guys walked up. The older guy said to his buddies the truck was complete a few days ago. I got the very distinct impression they were there for the instrument cluster and the clinometer. They even rearranged the stuff in my wheelbarrow to see if the clinometer was there when I wasn't looking (I had the clinometer hidden).

In my sleep last night I realized a whole bunch of stuff I should have snagged ... coil/ignitor, ECU, and a few other things. So I went back this morning and found a corpse. Yesterday afternoon somebody really picked the truck. No tranny, no tc, no diffs, a bunch of engine stuff missing, no ecu. DANG! This truck was presented to U-Pull on Dec 15th and must have been sitting in the back.

In a side yard not open to the public were a bunch of cars. One is a 1993 T-100. I'm curious how long it takes them to pull it out for the vultures. We need to start paying attention to that side lot.

I noticed I hadn't posted anything in the U-Pull since January. I was there before I went to Baja, and last weekend. There is a 1982 FJ60 in the yard pretty complete. It still had the intake/exhaust manifolds, the carb, and the engine. I snagged some stuff off it when I was there in early March, and it looks like nobody has touched it since. There is still the usual assortment of Gen1 and Gen2 4Runners and trucks. All of the 22re's were picked over. Seems folks like the timing cover, dizzy, ECU, and ignitor. There were some solid axle trucks there, but the axles were gone. I didn't see anything in the side yard staged to come out.

Mike mentioned awhile back that the U-Pull was going to modify their website to include their inventory. It's done. I found that not all of the models are listed in the "select a model" drop-down box so it's best to browse the whole list. I'm curious how real time this list is.
