Anyone know the part number for a Toyota freeze plug block heater that will fit a 2F? Called my dealer and they said they don't cary them anymore and couldn't look it up. I thought if someone had the actual part number I could try it that way.

And what installation tips do you have to increase the longevity and keep it from leaking?

SOR carries them and you can also go to the webpage of the company that makes them and do a search for their part number (they do not list one for the F/2F block).

This is the company that makes them. If you know the freeze plug diameter you can find a solution.

click on the "Application Guide & Product Catalog" Link. The do not list one directly for an F/2F engine but as you can see, there are units that will properly fit.

You can get these at any autoparts store. Made be Katz, Zerostart and probably others. 50mm plug available in 400 and 600 watt models.

Your best bet is O'Reilly's. I just was picking one up for my F250 and Autozone and Advanced didn't carry them. O'Reilly's hooked me up with the right part.

Autozone/Advanced had generic 400W versions that would probably fit your cruiser in one of the freeze plugs. Not sure if it is screw in. My Cruiser came with a cannister style and I have yet to use it on the car but it will boil the water in the cannister with 10 seconds when turning it on. So that may be an option as well depending on what you are going for.

Apparently it depends on where you live. I tried all the big name parts stores already mentioned. Finally called Car Quest who's not particularly close to me and they didn't have one, but found one in Indiana and had it shipped in for me. I'm going to pick it up now.

One more question. From what I've found, they will all eventually start leaking. Any suggestions or tricks to increase the longevity before it starts leaking?

I've never had one leak. They usually fail from corrosion / water intrusion of the heating element after many years of service.

I don't know a ton about them but I like the one in my cruiser becuase it is self contained and has hoses running to it. Easy to fix if a leak develops.

The one I just put in my F250 PSD was designed for it and it threaded right in so I don't see why it would ever leak.

I know heavy equipment companies make a canister type that might be a little big but would work well.

I have installed more than I can remember... and used/seem/been around a lot more than I have installed. Never had or seen a leakage problem with a freeze plug heater.

Finally got around to installing this. Because the block is not installed this is a  job. FYI The part number from Car Quest is 78272. It is installed in the second plug location. However, if I was installing it in one with a header, I would probably check to see if it would fit in the first or last plug location.

The original block heater in mine failed... Date on it was 1968.:)

Get a 50mm frost plug heater from an auto parts store just put mine in works great so far. Couldn't find a Toyota part that would fit...

I use the heater hose ones too. Less obtrusive and easier to install. Instant heat to the core too.

I found that the 400w heater took forever to heat up a 2F. Since my freeze plug days, I have switched to the tank style heaters, which have a check valve that pumps the water through the engine. Works great, and I somewhat faster, I think. Much less hassle to replace when they fry, too.
