Hi, New to fj40 and am having trouble with my lights. I searched
previous post on blinkers but could not find an answer. The green wire that goes to the tail and front lights always has power. I traced it all the way back to the light swich and it is always hot. I tried a different switch same thing. This is suppose to be a 73 style harness but I am not sure since it was a replacement from ebay. This is going in a 71 with the 73 steering colum. Tail lights only have two wires. I ran a seperate ground from each light to the battery to be sure of a good ground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the running lights are always on. And yes I am having blinker issues, when I put the left blinker on the right side blinks, when I put the right blinkers on nothing. I followed these wires also and they are correct side for side.
Thanks

Running lights: You should be able to move the running hot wire to a spot on the light switch that only comes on when the switch is on. Do an advanced search for wire diagrams for your truck. They have been posted many times.

good luck

I do have a wiring diagram and according to it the wires are connected correctly.

What year was this?
On my 71 if you twist the ring that holds the blinker on the steering column one direction or another, The blinker shaft does not engage the switch..Make sense? Try turning the ring a little to see where the sweet spot is, Then tighten it back up.
I dont know why you have a light constantly on.
Good luck

Maybe disregard my thoughts....IIRC 73 steering column has the key on the column, But Im unsure about the blinker switch.

The body is a 71 but the steering column and wiring harness are from a 73.

I'm not sure which switches I used, they wern't labeled when I took them apart. The plugs match but the wire on the switch side colors don't match the harness side. I did try the other switches in the box but no change.

Most of the wires on this diagram will not be correct for ya, But the Hazard switch & Light Switch images may help you get an idea of their basic functions.

My rig with mongroal mix match of years.

Thanks for everyones suggestions, still can't seem to figure this out. Just noticed the brake lights don't work, four way works but still no blinkers.

The four way flasher, at least on later trucks is different from the turn flasher. I don't have a diagram in front of me, but I'd check wiring at the flasher. Hot in, turn on, output differentiates when it flashes. If it's hot in *(continuous), and hot continuous or nothing out, you need a flasher. You can use any two pole flasher by making a pair of jumper wires from your factory flasher plug to the bayonet connectors on the new flasher (male x female flat bayonet). Once you have a wire that flashes coming out of the flasher, all the turn signal switch does is differentiate which side the flash is going to.
