Do what ya have to do and not worry about it. You may just want to sell it, get a beater that gets good gas millage, save up and get a diesel cruiser.

Thanks mate, but it's 23l per 100km of PETROL, gas is even more because it uses more per km than petrol, but because it's cheaper people keep using it thinking they're on to a winner. Not true.

QUOTE=rove_mcanus;6502928]23l/100k is about right for a vapouriser type lpg setup. Only way you can lower that is to go gas injection.

Soemthing bout your math don't ad up either. 23litres per 100k, and 80km's a day at 95 cents per litre works out at $17.50

If you bought a diesel, turbo or otherwise it will use about 12litres per 100k. not sure what diesel is worth up there, but at say 1.60 a litre that's $15.36. A minor saving and probably not woth the hassle of selling and buying another.

Your mileage should go down if your drive is mostly highway. Personally I can do 14l/100 on petrol on the highway, and about 17-18l around town. that's driving pretty slow (and it's an auto).

Actual mileage is more like 20 around town because i lead foot it everywhere.[/QUOTE]

Here in Europe I think we pay more than the doubble for the fuel, compered to US oder AU. But you don`t have all the great dieselengines to make lot of driving with.

The gas is about $2,54 per liters! now, and diesel is about $2,35 per liter.

I know it`s not a good way to compare, couse we all got pricelevels in a total sosial context. May we got highter overalprices, and more earnings for the work..

compramise with a diesel highsurf or 4 door hilux. 4 banger diesel should be good l/km. or get a honda xr400, escelent bike that will take you anywhere. should be able to get one of them fairly easly, cheeper then a car ride it when its nice, take the cruiser in the rain.

Sounds like your between a rock and a hard place.

Have you thought about downsizing to an early 90's hilux/4 runner or early prado?

the 2.8 diesel would be my pick. in good tune they use about 10l/100k and a bit less on the highway.

That way you could live with just one 4 door wagon/ute.

Hey Croozer,

I get about what Rove_Mcanus suggest with my Manual Petrol. If yours has not been changed I would try changing out the O2 sensor as that sets your tune. I also run my base timing at about 5 degrees BTDC (standard is 3 degrees). I find this helps. Any more advance and I lose a little bottom end and at factory setting my truck is a bit lack luster therefore you drive it harder effecting economy.
Good luck bud. I couldn't imagine life without my 80!!!

Well as much as we love this place 40km out, we have decided against it because it's just too far!! My wife was more against selling the 80 than I was, and she doesn't even drive it!
Plus it is a little far out, no matter what you're driving.

We are searching closer to town now, still rural 5 acres, but only 30km out (we're 18km out where we are now)

Saw a kick-ass place yesterday, the guy is a sheetmetal worker and has made this HUGE undercover area coming off the house with awasome pool and just great outside living. Plus a massive bar/party area he made because they used to race cars out the back, it's got spotlights surrounding the area and everything! Pitty the house sucks balls.. It has 2 crappy rooms that are joined together without a door (extra large hole) then a crappy bathroom and a kitchen. The whole place looks home made too by the way.. There is a bedroom on its own (again, home made) just off the house and the rest is outdoor living. all on 5 acres. LOTS of room. I credit the bloke for doing such a unique building but it's just not for us. We've just got to wait until something pops up on to the market. Don't know how long thats going to take. Things are however more expensive which makes it more difficult because these areas are closer to town and charge accordingly, but we know something will eventually pop up.

We still have to wait until a couple of properties sell to fund the deposit on this one anyway so all is not lost and we will be in a better position to pounce once that happens too.

Glad to hear you are keeping the LC :bounce:

Long term though... good to hv a diesel if fuel cost is a consideration :D

That is kinda true. .

But I love my truck and I've done a few things to it and know that it's very reliable, it's hard to say goodbye to something that special. I could buy someones diesel lemon and have all sorts of problems. I'm sticking with my beloved truck.

yeah, I know what you mean...

I've got 2 yotas (HDJ81 bought used & AE92 bought new) that'll probably need to be pried from my cold fist :grinpimp:

That said, the 1HD-FT is ridiculously frugal :D

Nobody has mentioned a bike? Before cercumstance gave me the Passat, I ran motorcycle for a couple years. Old bike was 50mpg, one I have now is 60-70mpg. Makes a huge difference.

Mine is a turbo diesel 5 speed manual IIRC you guys call them 'standard', anyway I get 30 MPG! :flipoff2:

I love it, a girl friend has a Peugeot 206 1600 cc petrol also manual and my car is more economical than hers! :D

regards

Dave

Hey dump all your gear and both sets of rear seats!

Unless you're swimming in cash or don't do much driving, as far as I'm concerned 80's are an awful and impractical DD.

Buy up some cheap fuel-efficient thing, put the 80 away for special days and offroading.

I bought my 80 to save gas with......My other rides at the time were a FJ60 and a FJ40 so its all relative. I consider the 14-15 mpg I am getting decent. And if I stay under 70 I get close to 18 on the highway. However my commute is only 7 miles of country road so I drove my 40 today.

Buy a yaris/scion

Mate - 23l/100 on petrol is faarked. I get 20l/100 round Sydney with a 4" lift and 33s muddys with all the stop start traffic, and 16l/100 on the highway.
Get a decent tune up, change all your fluids, check your brakes aren't binding, change the air filter. On standard tyres you should get around 14-15l/100 on the highway
Consider getting a snorkel (sensible for the wet anyway), doesn't help round town but my fuel use drops by a litre or so on the highway

HTH

You could up yr tire pressure to yr max tolerance level to save couple of bucks if it makes you happy :D... on nice black tops

Sometimes, I go to 43psi for my 275/70R16. Could go higher without wonky steering but hey... :bounce:

I have a FJ-40, FJ-60, and a FZJ-80. I flatly refuse to get rid of them because they do so great off road and in the Winter, but my commute mixed with $4.00+per gallon gas forced me to buy a Corolla. -sigh-

34mpgs compared to 12-15mpgs. I also drive a Honda XR650L in Summer to reduce the ol' gas bill (and to have some fun) ;)

Remember: Your tires will make a difference to your odometer. An old trick a truckie told me about his 80 was that buying larger tyres dropped the odo, so mud tyres are sometimes a little bigger in the tread, that will affect what you think you're getting slightly. I filled up again today and got my calculator out and got 17.5l which sounds about right. Sorry.. wrong calcs before!
