Has anyone noticed these black rubber strips running along the edges of the roof.
They run under the roof rails on each side from the windshield to the rear hatch.

I 1st noticed that I had some missing on the LX a few months back, when one blew out of its track at the car wash.

I have since noticed that looking at all 3 200s I have in the stable at the moment, not one has a complete set of them still on it? I guess they all must have blown out at car washes or something along those lines that caused them to come off the vehicles.

What are they good for, should I replace the missing ones, should I ditch them all? Why are they there?

Any of you noticed them missing on your 200s?

If replacing them what have you done if anything to keep them from coming off again?

I noticed a couple were missing a while ago. Ordered from stealership. $20 if I recall. Probably need to check and see if they are still there.

That's them.
All 3 of mine have some missing from different random locations.

What do they do. Is it to reduce wind noise or something like that?

Guess I don't understand, are you says that I do have something missing or I don't? Based on my attached pic's? The pieces in the rails are rubber, is there suppose to be an additional rubber piece that is suppose to be on top of these rubber inserts? Looked at my 100 and it looks the same as my 200. Take a pic of yours so I can see what your talking about.

I don't know. I lost one of them and another was hanging by a thread. I gave them the dumpster toss when I got to Whitehorse and I'm sure they are still in the campground garbage can if you want them. They have no use as far as I know and I was sick of thinking about them.

I was just saying your pic was what I was referring to missing on mine.

Yours all seem to be there based on what I can see in your pic.

I would keep an eye on them if you use high pressure car washes or drive through washes with high power dryers.

I am guessing that's why I am missing several pcs.

I'd go with a small bead of black RTV.

This.

RTV will flex with hot/cold cycles, and is REALLY strong too. Super glue would crack and be useless the second you turned your back on it.

I am thinking that there may be some water drainage function to them, I am not sure about that, I would say using RTV you want to be cautious not to block the water drainage????

Its possible, but I have not seen any drains. Not to say they are not present underneath one of them.

Well I am thinking those are some sort of gutters that the rubber pcs fit in. Basically a drain gutter like on a house to shuttle water away from the passengers getting in and out the doors, and the rubber pcs are either for sound deadening from wind at higher speeds or for keeping mud or other debris from clogging them. This is just my best speculation as to what they are or could be for.

Figured I'd post on an existing thread

How about the rubber / hard plastic protective strips that run the length of the roof in the center . They are meant to protect the roof when stowing gear up on the roof.

Is there a part number for these protective strips ? Would be nice to add a few more. I put some lightweight bags, and at times maxtrax, on the roof.

It works well but would be nice to add another one or two to help protect from more scratches. If not could add some generic rubber stripping.

That channel is a seam where the body is glued and spot welded together. Every car has them now, and has for decades. They weld the body together there, then stick that rubber thing in to cover the ugly seam, so they don't have to fill it in and make it smooth. Saves a ton of labor. Sedans will have a rubber strip that is the same color as the body paint, so you don't notice it.

Back in the old days, bodies were soldered and "leaded" in there. It was quite an art to see the old body guys using a torch and spoon to smooth the lead over, often it took almost no sanding to make it smooth before paint. Check it out on YouTube. Then the lead poisoning caught up to them...

What year is your truck? LC or LX? I don't have any plastic strips on my roof (other than the previous mentioned ones under the roof rack side rails).

I realized I was in the 200 series forums =[ I'm in a 2002, will give Toyota a call Monday and see if they can point me in the right direction

I had to replace mine. There is a channel on the rubber strips on the sides. I ran a bead of silicone down that tiny channel. A slim piece of steel from the body fits into the rubber channel when they are seated properly. Once I did this hack they never leave in any carwash. Go to whatever car wash you regularly go through and ask them if they have any. They may not be yours but they should fit. You may have to shorten depending on the model you have but they would be complimentary…
