Jerry can directly on the roof -- ok to proceed?

Metal swells in the heat too. I have 3 wavian knockoff metals cans I used in Utah in 2023 and they would swell in the heat as the fuel vaporized and would compress when we’d come down from altitude just like plastic. Maybe a much heavier gauge metal would do better?

The rotopax is pretty thick and strong plastic. It will swell, but a lot less than the scepter cans
Wavian has some pretty impressive videos out there about what their cans can take with respect to pressure. This assumes competent gaskets though. The knockoffs may look the same, but the same they are not. My $0.02.

NATO jerry cans certainly heat up, when it's really hot and the cans have been baking in the sun, it can be hard to open with the pressure. However, I have not noticed it swell at all. Coming from Texas and Florida trips. No issues with leaking, due to the design being so good, where as plastic screw on lids can leak easily.

If heat on metal cans was an issue then the military would have changed imo. Here is my setup out in Big Bend Texas.

Haven't had my Wavians swell much or leak even in Florida heat. Now with that said, I have been vary careful opening these red cans when they've been in the sun. If you fill them to the very top you'll risk gasoline "burping" out when you open the lid. If you want to use the Wavians in the heat don't fill them to the very top. Rather, fill them to about 4 inches from the top to leave a space for the higher vapor pressure. I did this and with a little extra room for vapor expansion didn't even see a slight bulge or "burping" of gasoline when I opened them.

I might consider on a platform style (aftermarket) roof rack, but I would not try this as the OP described just placing it on the roof and tying to the factory rails. Not secure enough. I personally would buy a harbor freight hitch hauler for the West Texas trip, tie your extra gas onto that, then sell or store the hitch hauler when you're done.

or return it 🤣

How big is the Thule box? While I have an LRA tank I will also use Armadillo bags and just throw them into my Thule box up top.

So not rated for fuel and not recommended for drinking water, ...

That was my take when I visited the website. So what are they good for?🤷‍♂️
They’re great for carrying fuel, but due to regulations can’t be advertised as such.

I got mine on Black Friday a couple years ago.. still haven’t used them though.

Edit: and now that I think about it the whole reason I got them was to put fuel on the roof if needed.

It's obviously meant to carry canola oil...

They are meant to carry fuel. They just can't legally say it due to epa & carb regulations therefor the legal mumbo jumbo and verbiage.

No, not one reason. Just a bunch of reasons:
  1. It is sitting directly on the roof.
  2. It is plastic and can leak.
  3. It is plastic and can be damaged by flying road debris
  4. It will be hard to secure.
  5. It will move around.
My suggestion would be to invest in a trailer hitch rack and store it and other stuff. I suggest that because with a roof box mounted you will probably not be able to mount a roof rack too.
this, all i could think with fuel on the roof (gasoline) was a giant fireball of liquid poring down the back of my neck,
not comforting, more of a significant issue offroad with trees and such
Now that im on the diesel, not so much of an issue but still built a hitch fuel basket

This reminds me of the ads for food supplements that hint at the incredible health benefits of using their product such as fiber to lessen the likelihood of diabetes to a more healthful immune system which should stave many diseases. But they then hasten to add, because they haven't proven those claims to the FDA, that finally say in very fast talk "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

I use those 3 gallon roto pacs. those things do not breath so no vapors. They are tough.

Not a bad analogy. But also not hard to imagine, given the pretty onerous rules on modern fuel storage containers. Can anyone say the stupid vapor-proof pour spouts have actually worked for them long term?

When I was looking at these they had a bunch of good reviews from the adventure bike crowd, and that was enough for me to take the risk. The fact that they compress down to nothing when not in use was a huge factor for me.
