I didnt have much time today but I managed to get the headlight switch moved and made a teplate for mounting the bezel.

I will probably go with the autometer Z series tach, they are a good size for the bezel, look fairly close to stock, and are available in a few different RPM's. I have been looking around for something else with a litle lower price tag but there isn't much out there as far as low rpm options. What I have found is only available in 2" which will look a little small in the bezel. A 10,000 RPM Tach does't make much sense for a 40 even if it is a Chevota. I am going to look at a couple industrial supply places next week just to see if there is a quality unit out there that might not have the price tag associated with a big brand name. If anybody knows of a good option I am missing, please post up. Thanks

VDO gauges are another option, the needle matches nicely, maybe it's a little too red but the shape is right and the markings are a good match too. They come in several rpm ranges and can be had front lit, or I think there is a back lit version as well.

Looks pretty good, I think I may want one...

What about making the opening the same size as stock? That way if you wanted, you could easily adapt the FJ60 tach to fit in there.... just an idea.

Makes sense to me.

Maybe once you get this project roliing and you sell a few, then a couple of one-off's for the 60 tach....

I love this idea!!!!

I cannot tell you how much I dislike the fact that the bezel I have is plastic, I would love a steel, or a billet aluminium replacement.

Do you have any pics of the back? How the tach will mount to the bezel and in turn mount to the dash?

Again, it looks freaking sweet!!

Put me down for one of these when production for sales begins. Awesome

Very very nice. Are you ready to show off the reverse? Just wondering how the gauge is held in, etc? And did you do anything to reproduce that dorky clip that the OEM version uses to hold the side of the bezel without the screws to the dash, or did you come up with a better solution?

Thanks Drew,

Here is a few shots of the back. The first one is just the bare bezel, second is the bezel with the guage just sitting on it, and last is the bezel with the ring that locks the gauge in place. The gauge is held in place by 4 machine screws that bolt through the ring and into the bezel.

The bezel is held to the dash by the two bolts you see from the front as well as two machine screws on the other side that are only visible from the back. Absent from the picture is a rubber o ring that goes between the gauge face and the bezel.

that is so slick, very nice indeed. I have been tossing the idea of trying to replace the plastic cover for glass like in the speedo gauge cluster so its more clear in mine

Nice. Is that the Auto Meter Tach? If so, can you post up a pic of the back of the Yazaki Meter Tach. Thanks.

It is the autometer tach with a custom face, I have one for the 4k also. Sorry, I dont have a Yazaki Meter Tach or any pictures of the back of one. I think I did see some posted in the threads on retrofitting a 60 tach into a 40 with a stock RHD bezel.

Beautiful job, well done Mopdog. You're making me reconsider my resistance to cutting my dash... :hhmm:

Any more advancement to production on this unit?? Wanting to put a tach in my BJ42 as well.

Great looking piece by the way Mopdog!

I am waiting on some custom seals that should be done next week. I had planned on using an off the shelf o ring but I wasn't able to get the fit I wanted. Considering most of us run at least part of the year topless, a weak seal wasn't a concession I was willing to make. Hopefully I will be able to post some installed pics next week. Thanks
