I'm really stuck right now:

I bought the 35mm block heater, and I went for a (kinda-sorta) accessible freeze plug just aft of the injection pump on the driver's side.

I tapped on the freeze plug, but it went into the block, and while I can wiggle it around with my finger, I can't get it out. The channel it fell into is very shallow, and there's no room for it to turn sideways.

So 1 - Does anyone have an idea how to get it out? and 2 - That space is way too shallow for the heater I bought, so if not there, which plug was I supposed to use?

Right now I'm worried that I'll have to start pulling components off until I can reach it well enough to get some real leverage in there.

I wouldn't worry about an old welsh plug falling into the water jacket. I prefer to get them out but some just leave them in there to corrode. They are sacrificial, so no real harm down.
If you want it out, try crushing or mangling it with a screwdriver.
