I've got a 2B engine in a BJ44. I added a direct read temp gauge after replacing water pump, radiator, and tstat. No matter how hard or long I run even in summer, temperature doesn't go above 160. This means the tstat never opens. When I bought it, there was no tstat. Am I correct in assuming my heat will not work if the tstat is not open? I guess the good news is my engine cooling system works great.

You should be able to look at the hoses and see how they are routed. The thermostat only controls flow to the upper radiator hose. The water pump is still pumping through the engine block and cylinder head via the heater hose and the bypass hose on the bottom of the thermostat housing, even when the thermostat is closed.

That at least is how it works on my 3BII. I've never seen a 2B myself, but it's going to the the same as a B and 3B I assume.

The thermostat isnt in upside down is it?

Got the heater sorted and working. Blower wasnt working. Also realized I had a tropical thermostat installed and installed the correct one. It still runs 170ish max but running strong.
