So after a year of having my top I finally got around to painting the "bows". I really wanted to color match them with the tub but since my vehicle is a custom color I was having a hard time finding a rattle can that would be similar enough. My truck is really close to Freeborn Red but not exact. Quote from a local shop to paint was over $400. Color matched paint from Finish Masters was over $120 just in materials. I also don't own a good compressor or gun. I recently unscrewed the bolting points on the bows and installed some little squares of generic rubber padding to stop some squeak/rattling, btw this works great. While I was doing it I noticed that there was some very slight surface rust starting to form so I decided it was finally time to take action. I pulled the whole thing apart and sanded down the individual pieces.....forgot how many pieces this thing came in....16! I finally found a rattle can color that is close enough to my trucks color to work, it's not perfect but it will do the trick. Anyway it was a lot of painting but the bows came out really great...the primer and sanding made all the difference. The bows took about 20 mins each pass to do since I had to basically hit each one 4 sided and I made 3 passes. I didn't use a clear coat. One nice thing about the rattle can job is that it is easy to touch up. Now the hard part, waiting for the paint to cure for a week before I can put them back on. I'll post some shots when I get them installed but here is one from the painting.
