How about sharing the part number for the grommets?

I don't have a part number for the gromets I used as I went to OSH (though I'm sure the Home Depot and Lowes will be the same), went the the sliding racks of hard find hardware (you know the vertical racks with the little 4"x4"x4" bins in them with a sample parts attached to the outside), found the area with the cloth snaps, and there they were. And that was on my first trip to the hardware store.

Dusty66's grommets look like they may have an OEM part number...so he may be able to post up.

Fantastic. Looks like Eshan does a great job. I trust you are happy with it? The seem doesn't bother me one bit. Kinda makes it look more rugged.

I am incredibly happy with it.

Drove with all the panels down and latched on highway at 70mph...a little flapping from the roof, but the sides pressed inward a bit, but it was solid as a rock. Very impressed.

why did it take 18 months?

Long story short: We had a large order, order shipped, crate broke, tops and bows got water logged, bows had surface rust and the tops had really bad mold damage, some of us kept our bows, Eshan made and shipped new tops on his dime. The link in the first post is the group buy starting in November 2005 (yes that is 2005).

Our replacement tops were in line after the group that ordered after us. So look at the 18 months as the time it takes for two orders, with shipping by sea.

Gotcha, thanks!

Dusty, how about it? Give up those part numbers!

mcmaster-carr has those cheap also

I believe that is the first time I've seen the words "McMaster-Carr" and "cheap" in the same sentence.

Biscuit,, I don't see the rear piece with the 2 vertical up-rights  any more progress?

I went with the option to not install those three pieces since they are mainly for the soft tops with amby-doors. I can post a pic of the unpainted parts sitting on my garage floor ;).

seam on the top

With the top all on I do have two questions still.

First, is there supposed to be a snap fastener or something in the front corners? My driver side is nice and taught, but my passenger side has a tough of a sage at the curve from vertical to horizontal.

Second, I thought that the soft tops had two seams running the length of the roof portion. Mine has one on the driver side. Seems a bit odd but that might just be the way it was/is. That and my brain can detect a lack of symmetry pretty easily.

UPDATE 4/5/07: I think I found the answer to why there is only one seam. The picture below is from birfeild.com and shows an early 40 with a single seam soft top.

The seam was likely placed on the left side to afford more protection to the driver on the right side. It is likely that the seam wasn't switched to the right for the FJ40L variant. What looks like a seam on the right side of the vehicle appears to be a crease. I could always apply some tricks I learned in my latest grad class to do some image processing to better determine if it is a seam or a crease.

All and all it is an awesome top. The breeze blowing through the rig with shade from the sun is really nice. Definitely worth the wait, though if you get one I hope your wait is less than 18 months.

any problems with that seam leaking??

Mine has the velcro straps in the same location. I just elected not to use those parts are they are not required for the top to function.

They may get put in after the next cycle from hardtop to softtop.

I can also state I have no daylight coming through anywhere other than the windows.

Interesting thread, but has kinda died? What happened to the leaky seam post?
