today i was trying to separate the inner shaft from the birfield - i used a pvc pipe and it worked out great for the separation but it messed up one of the snap rings that you cant see until seperating - i first moved the first snap ring up out of the grove then used the pvc pipe trick-- does this usually happen for the second ring to break -- so i guess i have to order one from toyota -- so when i put it back together how do you do that without breaking again

The inner snap ring usually breaks. That's normal.

The inner snap should not be reused per FSM, a lot of people do FWIW. You can martack the axle and never need the snap ring again. Several methods of reinstalling the snap ring, it can be done by carefully pressing in from two sides with small screwdriver if you are lucky.

Yep, it is at least a 50-50 chance that ring will snap no matter how you remove it.

Some guys use a zip tie around the ring to compress it for installation. I usually just finess it with a small screwdriver tip as I put a little pressure on it pushing it together.

Mark...

i knew this wouldnt be a easy fix -- so you can see the second ring when installing -- i do have snap ring pliers for the first one -- i dont have a welder and dont know how too but i want to learn soon -- i have rust

I have been using the zip tie method for re-installing the birf. Just cinch it down tight then slide the axle into the birfield the zip tie slides back as the snap ring goes in.
