Hello All,

I’m going to try my front Birfield rebuild next weekend and I would like to know the type and amount of grease that every one uses.

I’ve searched the past posts and have come up with 2 different amounts, 1 was 4lbs (5lb pale?) and the second was for 11 tubes; I assume that this is for both sides??? Since I’m mail ordering this (and don’t forget clueless!) I really desperately need some direction on the amounts to order; also should it be tubes or pales?

I’m sure that I’ll take flak on this one; in the Amsoil site they list 2 different types of NLGI #2 grease.

AMSOIL Synthetic GH Series Heavy-Duty EP Grease

And

AMSOIL SYNTHETIC GVC LITHIUM COMPLEX HIGH VISCOSITY GREASE

Which is it?

If anyone has any other brand’s that they are familiar (Royal Purple, Redline), with can you also chime in with the exact product name and brand.

Thanks, I’m sure all the newbie’s will appreciate it, even if I’m the last one. :bounce:

I used Valvoline Durablend with Moly...used ~2 tubes per side on the birfs.

I used Mobil 1 full synthetic grease for the wheel bearings. Used 1 tube per side.

I used a little over two tubes of non-moly, Mobil 1 synthetic universal grease for the bearings. About 2-1/3 1lb tubs of Exxon moly grease in the birfs. Probably over what I needed to put in there. I would've liked synthetic moly grease in the birfs, but ran out of time. Mr Moly is my preference for moly grease.

About two of the grease gun style tubes for the birf cavities for me. I used Valvoline Durablend Moly fortified and one Durablend {not Moly} tub for all of the wheels bearings. Plus 3 bottles of Mobil 1 Synth for the dif not to mention a couple of cans of brake parts cleaner and about a half gallon of solvent. I don't have a parts washer so I clean everything in a steel bowl on the bench.

IIRC I used ~4 tubes of AMSOIL GHD (moly fortified), and ~2 tubes of GLC (non-moly). Per the FSM, I used the moly fortified in the birf and in the trunion (knuckle/kingpin) bearings, and the non-moly on the wheel bearings/hub. I bought an extra tube of each but didnot need it

So to sum this up with a little cut and paste from the Amsoil website,

The GHD is NLGI #2 (GHD moly fortified) is http://intershop.amsoil.com/cgi-bin/Amsoil.storefront/40ea30a003e7cb16271bd1f0e3f006ff/Catalog/1164

GLC (non-moly) http://intershop.amsoil.com/cgi-bin/Amsoil.storefront/40ea30a003e7cb16271bd1f0e3f006ff/Catalog/1167

Thanks for your help.
