Hey thanks man!

Very cool looking family rig in storage btw... Would LOVE to see that one finished!

You and me both! Kills me that it's 900 miles away. :crybaby: But at least I know it's safe and protected until my situation changes and I can get back on it.

Well, maybe I'm more of a chicken than he was...:D But in all honesty, I can't really imagine doing that now- unless MAYBE you were locked front and back and had super low gearing.

No, it was just a steep hill with dirt on it back then. Crazy how things change.

How are those 60 springs working out for you? ;)
Justin

Hey Justin!

Haven't gotten them on there yet! Soon as I do though, and I have a chance to take it out, I'll let you know and post some pics here!

:)

nice rig man will the 60 rear springs push the axle back a few inches? Mine needs new springs all around and was thinking about some 55 or 60 springs to give me a few inch wb stretch. 35 years of snowplow duty in Colo. Sprgs took there toll on the springs.

Thanks!:)

On my spring over, I reversed both the front and rear springs- the long side of the spring, instead of being between axle and shackle, is now between the frame and axle. This distance (can't remember what it is off the top of my head) is more-or-less the same distance as the short side of a 60 series rear spring. With the 60 springs on the same way they are mounted from the factory, or the stock springs flipped, you gain ~2" of wheelbase at each end.

HTH!

I'm in central Cali now I bought mine bone stock in black forest back in 07' when I was helping a friend with work for a few months. Its mostly rusted out but I wouldnt get rid of it for any amount of money. I am looking at moving to Colo Springs when
funds allow. Its about the most beautiful country I have seen.I did get the original paper work when it was bought new back in 72 and all maintenece records from that time. Im still not sure what route to go with for suspension whether sua or soa trying to figure whats best for me.

Having the original paperwork and maintenance records makes it much more personal when you know the history of the vehicle. The old Scout 80's and 800's were given a "Line Ticket" when assembled on the assembly line which described all the parts and options that were put on the vehicle. A lot of Scout owners still have them, even when there has been multiple owners. They just pass them on to the next owner. Cool stuff.

Looks great! Good to know there's so many 40 guys close here.

Next time I go out, I'll try to PM some of you guys in advance and see if you want to do a run!;)

SOA.:D It made a pretty quick believer out of me just because of the difference in the ride. Maybe OME would be comprable or an ALcan that was set up just right, but then you'd still have springs etc hanging under the axle! ;)

But either way, half or more of the fun is the learning process!

Glad your moving back! It is beautiful country here. Having the original paperwork and maintenance records makes it much more personal when you know the history of the vehicle.
I decided to go SOA with mine. Justin at Redline is working on mine currently. It should ride, stop, and handle like a modern vehicle. It should also wheel the back country like a mountain goat!

I saw your rig when I was out at Justin's last time. It's gonna be a great ride! Definitely going to have to do a run. Maybe we can even pull Justin away long enough to go with us!

If go SOA would it be better to flip rear springs and put rear springs up front or flip the front springs also. I dont want to SR and if I go SOA it will be like Marks style with no c&t. But whatever way I go, I need to buy a welder and learn how to use it

Did I mention Coe that you have done a flippin sweet job so far. I dont have near the skills of a lot of these guys on these threads but I got a lot of ideas. Just need the skills to pull em off, that and money.

How does Big Muddy drive the hardtop after SOA.I took my hardtop off on 07 and never put it back on.Body wouldnt support it anymore.Besides I live in Cali, so who needs a top besides a bikini top.It was my dd for a year n a half but country roads took there toll. Its ghetto rigged back together but will be done right soon. I was gonna half cab the hardtop but still cant seem to cut into it yet

"Spring flip" Usually refers to keeping the springs in the locations that they are, but spun around 180* so that the long side is mounted to the frame as opposed to how they are now- with the short side mounted to the frame.

You need the extra length of the wheelbase from a spring flip to be able to do a Mark W. style springover- since it retains the stock pinon angles. Flipping the springs pushes the pinons away from the tcase- giving you a less extreme driveshaft angle than what you would have with a stock wheelbase and that is what allows the Mark W. style SOA to still work with parallel flanges at each end of the DS. The links that I posted above will explain all this in detail.

However, I also ran across a post where Mark W. did mention putting the springs from the back onto the front and vice versa. This was only for load carrying capacity and ride however and has nothing to do with the discourse above... Front springs and rear springs are identical lengths.

Search is your friend on all of this, and be sure that you understand why people do it each way and have made an informed decision b4 you tackle either! ;)

Thank you!

Practice... The skills will come. And as far as the money, yes you need it, but you can do a lot of this fairly cheaply if you turn and flip parts, do labor yourself, and etc... It still costs though:D

No adverse handling to note yet... I'll let you know about real off camber stuff when I've had more time to wheel... Haven't been able to do much of that lately.:frown: I do however realize that it's about a foot taller than it was stock and am not looking for sports car handling. That being said, I think it really handles well, and if I ever feel the need to do higher speeds around corners, will look into adapting a swaybar with quick disconnects onto it.

Hey thanks man. I read Marks website today and it gave some things to think about.:hhmm:

Do you mean Mark Algazy's website, Mark's off road? If not, would you please link Mark W.'s page here in this thread?

Mark A. is a great guy, cruiser vendor, and mechanic- but he and Mark W. are at polar opposite ends of the SOA idea. Which is fine- Mark A gets everywhere he wants to with his SUA rigs.

Yeah I saw Marksoffroad.com but I have heard about marks style no S/R and flipping springs and perches but I would love to see a link for it. Like I said in a previous post I need new springs, mine really sagged from pushing a snow plow in Black Forest for 35 years. I think I am sitting on my bumpstops just parked. I am trying to absorb all the info I can from mudders here. This place is awesome.
