Troll, to make the fan a bolt in deal you need either:
1. 77-78 fan blade and shroud (you currently have this shroud).
OR
2. 79-end fan blade and shroud (you currently have this blade).

It is acceptable to trim 1" off the ends of the plastic fan blade. the trimmed blade will still move more air than any stock 78-earlier fan.

Damn, I learn something every day. I had no idea that the fans got bigger '79>
Guess I just lucked out and got the right combo. The reason I said my fan blade came from a FJ60 is that it has the wings on the tips of the blades, but maybe I'm wrong about that:hmm:

Well I didn't want to cut the fan. So I cut 1/2 inch off the shroud. Fits pretty well.

Sorry. The shroud. Got to love air saws. Makes even a tard like me look like a pro. Course a pro would have gotten the right shroud.

I edited my original post.

Props to you Marshall for bulling through the minor details and getting it on the trail. I hope to meet you someday..................really.

I don't want to be a kill-joy Marshall. But it looks to me like your fan could still hit the shroud - particularly when you're going over bumpy ground on "sideways-camber slopes" - due to that big engine moving on its mounts.

There is a 1/4 to a half inch around the fan. I'm planning on getting the right shround and another fan anyway. Just tired of it sitting in the driveway not moving. I need to get out in the woods.

After draining the radiator, this morning I removed the valve cover and loosened all the head bolts and then re torqued them properly. Then put all the stuff back on. Filled the radiator and cranked her up. My idle was low even after going through the IAC setup so I drilled the plug covering the idle screw. What a pain in the ass. It's a thick mean plug. Finally off I adjusted the idle to 650 and then went through the timing procedure. Purrs like a kitten. Temps seem to be around 175-185. It's 100 degrees here today. SO if it doesn't get hot now I think it will be ok. Total I have run the motor is about 5 min. And it's to freekin hot to work on it. So I'm waiting until it cools down before tackling the break-in procedure.

2000rpm for 20 min.

The I was told to change the oil.

Got to get the exhaust back together and the drive shafts back on before I tackle that.

More updates tonight. Hoping to make my first trip tonight.

I used a good diesel oil for break in as advised by my engine builder as it has a lot more cleaning additives that are useful during break in.

Same 20 min @ 2000 rpm to bed the crank in, drain the oil and refill with a good quality oil. Changed the filter too.

A year and 4 days later I can honestly say this project is coming to an end. Just spent the last 30 min breaking in the motor. It was interesting sitting out beside the engine with a stick of mahogany to keep the throttle open. You really get to know your engine sitting beside it for 30 min running at quarter throttle with a flashlight checking to make sure nothing is leaking, paint melting or sparks escaping. Pretty cool listening to the fan clutch cycle though and the little dummy gages were pretty cool to watch.

I never expected the rebuild to take this long. What started out as a mild rebuild turned into a monster. I have yet to really add up all the money I have spent on it but it was a lot. The block was easy it was all the little things that got me. But I can honestly say it was worth every penny and the experience was priceless. I can say I know every inch of the motor. I have well over 400 hrs working on it and the sad part is I could have spent double the money and the time easily.

Anyway it was fun. I've got a small list to finish up. So I'll keep posting anything that might come up. Should be back on the road tomorrow I just have to adjust the valves and and put my seat back in.

Thanks for everyones help. I couldn't have done it without your help.

Oh and there will be a dyno after I get 500 miles on her and get to a point where I can really open her up.

Great thread, you should be proud.

If you want to move to the West Coast, I could use your help getting my 2FE off the ground.:D

Good stuff, please post up the road test report.

Well Big Gay is not looking good. Put everything back on it today. Minus the bumper and winch. Fueled her up and backed out the driveway. Knew I was having fuel issues but I wanted to make it to the gas station and back as a goal I had set. Going there was quick. I honestly can say I can light up the rear tires on the old gal. She fast and mean. Nothing was working right but it was still running. Got 2 gallons of gas, and then nothing but the sound of the starter turning over. and check engine lights flashing. After about 5 min of checking things an old black man said from a distance. " Sounds like your not getting enough gas." I said it was getting to much gas. By this time he was walking over to me. I felt like Alan Funk from candid camera. He was talking about adjusting the jets and midway though the sentence he said "good god almighty son what is that? That's no normal motor". No, I said it's big gay. At that point his wife who was in the car beside us told Bernard to get back in the car and go. He said "Wait a minute, wait a minute. Then turns to me and say damn! What is it? I gave the story and he and I shook hands and I assured him I could walk home if I had to. He offered a ride but there was no way some gay man was going to ride in her new car.

SO I got back in it pushed the throttle all the way down and started it didn't want to run but I limped it out into the main road as I turned left it came to life. It came in a big way. Enough to spin me around 180 degrees but I kept the gas down and kept shifting. Mustangs have nothing on me. Got it around the next turn and let loose. Running real rich bad rich but running. Got her in the driveway to verify the fuel pressure gage was spun all the way around. Code flashes 45 which means I'm rich go figure.

So now I need to route a new return line from the tank to the TBI and I think my issues will be solved. Yeeee Hawwwwww

NOW just imagine that engine Turbo'd :D

Great to hear it's almost there and the wheels are turning.

That was a good read. I can't wait for the youtube video. :steer:

So I made my first wheeling trip and my first trip out in the cruiser this weekend.

All in all the trip was around 300 miles. That's a lot of miles for it's second time on the road but I had no choice. Fridays drive up was hot with temps in the 90's. Never got above 190. Going through the mountains proved to be no problem even with 300lbs of gear in the back and a passenger. I could easily pass anyone whenever I wanted on any incline. It has power. Lot's of power. There were only a few times I had to downshift into 3rd and that was due to slower traffic and the cruiser being in between gears. I can ride 3rd up to around 45 before the engine really comes to life. I topped 4th out one time and I had the speedo just about pegged. I'm driving on 35" tires so even at 85 I'm going fast. Things can get scary at 100mph in a cruiser. Other than that short run I kept the cruiser to around 55 the whole time. SOA in the mountains is a handful anyway.

It took about 2 hrs on the road before the computer learned what was going on. Still it needs a little tweaking as it runs a little rich. I averaged around 14-15mpg through the mountains. Not bad and with a little more I can see 17mpg easily attainable.

The check engine light came on about 5 times the first day. Code was that it was running too rich. This probably all stemmed from when I had a fuel return issue from the TBI. You have to have a 5/16 or bigger return with no restrictions. My issue ended up being the poly tank I had had a 5/16 barbed return but the inside diameter was more like 1/8. This caused the return line to build back pressure and after about a second of running backup into the fuel feed line causing the fuel pressure to be around 35 psi which is a lot. A whole lot. I think I could have possibly damaged the injectors doing this. So I plan on buying some new calibrated ones before I start messing with the program.

As far as needing to have VSS and a knock sensor. Nonsense. The cruiser ran perfectly. Never an issue coming off off ramps, down hills, no stalling, no knocking, nothing. I don't see how a GM knock sensor from a 4.3 Chevy Astro Van would know what the hell to listen for on a 2F turning 5k rpms or any rpms. Warm up was unnoticed.

The best, I repeat the best part about this setup is the fact you can go out to your cruiser in the morning when it's cold and it will start and run. Run just like it would warm. No choke, no waiting, just crank and go. I love that fact.

Second best part is the sound it makes. At around 3k the sound out the throttle body is awesome. I can only compare it to a NASCAR motor.

Low end is also very good. I can crawl over most obstacles without even touching the throttle. It is really hard to stall this motor and 400rpm is easy. Torque comes on strong at around 800-1500 rpms and stays that way to about 4000 rpms. I'll know later this week when I get it dynoed.

It's fast, very fast for a 2f. And extremely smooth. Balancing made a big difference.

One issue I did have was my alternator died. So I'll be getting that fixed soon. Thank god a I had two batteries. First battery lasted the 4hr trip down and all the wheeling and the second all the way back with an hr of having to use the lights.

Will report more and possibly some video tonight.

It was good to be in the woods again.
