So I put this small block 305in my 40 after the ls motor was going to be too much work , wel rear main seal went on the 305 so now I'm thinking of putting

in a 396 which I found mated to a 700r4 3 spd cruiser case ! Pros and cons or issues I know cooling is one but anything else she is to big to have a Dinky 305 in her

Thanks had her for 22 years now since high school was stock has 4" skyjacker lift on 40's all stock original drivetrain and axels no longfields neve once have I broke anything since I owned it! Yes was thinking 1 tons cut down to cruiser width prob sly best option

I just read that article
Last night when I was researching info actually to fxxxing funny

ran big blocks for years unless you are stupid you wont break anything ,my street racer was a 73 fj40 fst with a 501 caddy in it and a turbo 400 and l 60 15 dunlop street tires and it would walk a thunderbird like it was standing still.everyone else had camaros and gtos or vettes and this 501 beat them all

the 500 would be awesome in a '40. I built a 4x4 Studebaker truck with a 500 caddy in it. I sold the motor to a guy who's building a suburban. I had the 425 heads (which raise the compression on the 500 to 9ish:1) - he's building it instead of going diesel. I think he's right in his assessment - that the mileage will only be 25% less than a diesel but will have all the diesel torque. Those things are monsters stock, raise the compression, a decent intake (that doesn't make the air flow uphill), and some headers and 500/500/500 would be easily achievable (500ci, 500hp, 500tq). I even briefly considered using the 500 in my build - but then he came along and offered me enough money to send it to a new home.

I got into 500s because of an acquaintance that's been running them at Bonneville since the mid-70s (and setting records).

that said... a 396? you do like the less-favored power plants? it'd be a good cruiser motor because the small bore/long stroke - but shrouding would really limit its hp potential.

500 caddy 525 ft lbs of tourque at 2400 rpms

I had a 283 in mine until it detonated. I was going to put a 396 in it until I found a 406 small block. I we with it so I didn't have to relocate my steering box and other stuff. I have a 4l60 behind it too.

I had LS7 454 with headers, cam, all the good bits, in my 40 on 36 and 38s, using 60 housings, 40 cv's, 60 t case, and 75 power steering back in about 1998.

Drove it like it was stolen in the bush, was awesome, ran a Qjet 850 cfm so it got good on road economy, and could throw real estate out the back like there was no tomorrow.

I had a 383 in the 40 before that, and 350 modded 45 series before thata s well, everyone shgould have a big block at least once in their life !
