I believe it is time to replace the starter in my LX. What brand would you guys recommend going with? I know I have purchased Denso in the past. Would you be against purchasing a reman starter?

Honestly, new from the dealer . I use a lot of denso parts at work, and remanned starters and alternators come back a lot regardless of manufacturer. "Reman for toyota" and remain denso are also different. I recommend new denso from Toyota if available.

New might be possible. ~$588/delivered from overseas sources.

probably the best option if really true, these things are beasts and last 15+ years and 200k+...

mine is at 200k and is now an 18 year old truck, still the same starter and probably just 1/2 - 3/4 into its life.

Best bet is denso reman and rebuild the original as a spare.

Are you gonna do it or have Patrick do it?

I am going to have the guy that helped me finish the timing belt do it. The starter is under the intake manifold. I dint want to have to tow the LX to Patrick then it take 2-3 days for him to work on it and find a ride down there. This mechanic comes to my house and can knock it out in a few hours and is cheaper than Patrick.

Bringing back this question, now that its 2023. Earlier this year and intermittently until it got cold around here (30s) the starter made some undiagnosed noises.

Although it hasn't made a noise in the last few weeks, want to get back exploring off road this winter and don't want to get stuck in the west desert.

So what's the best starter? Reman Denso or reman Toyota (dealer)?

A local shop that specializes in Land Cruisers replace with AC Delco (reading some old threads some people said they are likely reman Denso, but not sure).

Whaddya think?

Go with the best warranty. For example, Bosch gives 24 month vs Denso's 12 month. Dealer typically gives 24 month and are easier to process a warranty. May not seem necessary but the last couple years reman parts have been very hit or miss. I've had to eat a few warranty jobs in our shop due to shoty reman processes, especially on starters. Just had to redo a 911 and MB SL55 starter, and had 2 others this last year.
We've had much better luck with the dealer remans. May be wrong but I think the dealers are getting better grade/quality reman parts over the rockauto's, advanced, world pacs, etc.

Ya, reviewing a number of threads I've come to the same conclusion and am leaning that way.
