I placed my spare key in a 4x4x4 steel box.

I had Metaltech weld the box shut at all seams.

I burried it 10 feet down in my backyard.

I set pungee sticks (widdled sharp with poison tips) in the ground directly above it.

I covered the boobie-trap with dead leaves.

I'm comin' over with a backhoe and hole saw.

Sounds like a good place i will keep it in mind.

I am sorry Larry, but with your avatar I know where I would stick my spare key... just sayin....

I hung one on the wires behind the rear side marker light, I figure I can always get a screwdriver somewhere. while on the subject of being locked out, has anyone else seen this thing on the net, supposedly if someone at home has another remote(to your rig) they can open it over the cell phone.

I heard of that too. I tried it with my cruiser which has a viper keyless entry, and it didn't work. I also tried it on a Volvo S60 and it still didn't work. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think that many, if any, of these things run on sound. As for my spot, I like to not lock them in the car. Of course, now that I said that, I'm sure it will happen :D

So....what happens when you lose the key ring with the remote FOB? If you use the hidden key to get inside the 80 with the alarms blaring, I suppose there's a way to defeat the factory alarm?

As soon as you start the truck, the alarm should turn off

Unfortunately for me, I'd be deaf before I could open the door

Does not work, another internet hoax :) so far ive found 3 hide a keys on my 80, none placed by me. i have spied up on top of the spare tire carrier as a good option esp if offroad jarring is a concern. or up inside the hoop bar of your arb w/ a plug added to secure it.

My problem is that I can never remember where the H__l i put the damn thing. I actually put a note in my wallet to remind me, but I forgot about that , too.

If your alarm is RS3000 or TVSS, you insert the key, turn the ignition on, then off, then on, then off. This will defeat the intrusion alert.

I can't see how that could work - something about audio vs. RF and such.

But that's a neat idea - instead of (or in addition to) those key fob things, just add a cell phone to the system - call your truck, enter a password, and it opens! If you want to get really sexy, do voice recognition - my truck would be named HAL - "Open the pod bay doors HAL!" :D

Of course, if you're out of phone coverage you may be SOL.

Guys;

You'll never guess what I found while working on my 80?? Hint, it is in the name of the thread.

That's right; I bought my 80 used, seven years ago; got one key; I made one spare, but did not hide it on the vehicle; that is the first thing thieves do, they look for the spare key.

Today I found where the previous owner had put his key and his house key, 10 years earlier

I will not say where I found it as I do not think we should tell anyone where to find our keys, but I will say, it was well hidden. So well, that he left them there when he sold it.

Lessons learned?

Pull out the spare key along with your house key spare from your hide, before you sell your 80. And, if you do hide a key in/on your vehicle, put a phony key in an obvious (?orange) box for the thief to find, then the real key somewhere else. The theif will try the key that doesn't work, and will more than likely leave; or break the windows.

Apparently none of you are going to steal my 80, so I have to dispose of it the conventional way. How do I delete this thread? I poked around the how-to section, did a search, got nothin'. Hints?

Scott, there is no one left in MI to steel anything let alone you 80...
And if they did, they wouldn't get past the first gas station when they saw it cost $70 to fill the tank and drive 200mi.

PM a mod...

Thanks for reminding me i need to hide a key under my 80, or I'll probally wait until after I lock myself out and have to call AAA.

My key is not in the center console (i am not that stupid, the console doesn't have a lock:rolleyes: ), its in the glove box and I keep that locked.

But if you lost your keys, wouldn't the key to open the glove compartment be lost also?

I just keep a spare window in the rig so I can replace it after I break it to get my key...

So you just need to find a place to hide that sledge hammer on your rig...

Yes it would...but if I left it unlocked, then someone could steel my like new 303,000+ mi 1994 FZJ80. And how would you feel about that?:frown:
