Buy the carb from 65swb45, you will not be disappointed. He rebuilt mine, among many, many others.

I have tried for years to work with this factory Aisan Carb for my 1974 FJ40 with F Engine. I've had it rebuilt twice and it still doesn't work correctly. I've determined with much trial and error that it has something to to do with the regulating needle of the return line. I've fiddled with it enough and am considering either a Weber setup or Sniper EFI as a solution. I was told by a very reputable rebuilder that this carb is/was in very good condition before rebuilding. I would love to tell you that it works perfectly, alas If it were, I wouldn't have time to be writing this posting, I'd be off driving my rig. Please advise.. Thanks

I would not go with a Weber. My 1970 has a Weber and it has been difficult to get right for what I want. Unless you know them well and love adjusting things/tinkering them you won’t be happy. Does Marks Off-road still have the carb he listed? I would either buy it or a Sniper set up.

Cool, Thank you for the info. I've heard many good things about the Weber. Apparently there are two options of the Weber carb. The Sniper setup sounds great, however it looks like it might as much as $1600 for the parts and installation. The factory carb would be optimum but it hasn't worked thus far, though rebuilt by a very highly regarded rebuilder. I haven't decided which direction, but I'm done with this carb. I've put in all the effort I going to. Thanks for the info.

Shouldn't the rebuild kits have a regulating needle included in the kit? What exact problems are you experiencing with your carb (or entire engine) that makes your Fj40 run poor? Hesitation, popping, stuttering upon acceleration? Maybe someone on here can diagnose it.

If you ultimately decide to part out with your 1974 carb, I'd be interested in taking it up and using it on mine. :steer:

Please advise.. Thanks
I love the Aisan carb and think it's the best carb for a real LandCruiser.
My carb was made 10/'73. I've rebuilt it a few times, Jim C. Rebuild in 2004,
I'm curious how you determine the regulating needle of the return line is a problem?
Have you been watching the fuel level in the porthole?
I'd advise that you start a new thread and post what kind of problems your having.
Almost half of carb problems are really electrical problems.
And pics. Post pics of YOUR carb. I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

I have a 73 with an F engine and what I believe to be the OEM carb ... and correct me if I'm wrong, it matches the carb shown above (mine on the left with the above snippet on the right). If these are the same then I'd guess it would fit.

Real quick I see the one on the left has a return line the one right does not.

I had a 69 that had the single barrel and ran great. I lost the carb when I rebuilt the engine and went with a 32/36 Weber. It ran great too. The key to the Weber is that it functions at 3psi if I remember correctly. So you have to have a pressure regulator on the line. Now I have a 73 40 with a 772f with a sniper set up. Once dialed in its the most trouble free set up you can have. But it's not without any flaws. It takes some tinkering.

I would say Factory runs best.

Sniper is hassle free and runs great

Weber is a good option if you can tune one. My Weber ran great but needed some adjusting from time to time.

I wanna seeeeeee. OK. So I bought a 73 a year ago. Runs great with an F and has a weber dgas system on it. I haven’t dialed in the carb perfect but it always starts and drives strong. I have an electric fuel pump with an in line regulator at 2.5 psi. I think I have 2 stock mechanical fuel pumps and 3 original carburetors that came in multiple boxes that came with my 40. oh, there’s an air filter setup as well. I really want to convert it back to as stock as possible. looking for diagrams and gurus. Any advice is welcome.

The '73 linkage was unique to that model year. It has a bellcrank set-up at the base of the carburetor, with a throttle cable. And check this out:

Wow, that a lot of different carbs.

If you post up what pictures of you have, you might some more guidance. Date codes only help up to a point.
