Well apparently the guy from odysseybatteries.com misinformed me according to mrTJ. I apologize for 'not taking a few moments to research a bit before posting wrong information.' You'd think you'd get the most accurate information from the source.

The 925, 1200 and the available soon 1400 have LH/RH + posts. I haven't researched enough to find that 1700LT with the LH +.

Nor have I done enough research to find proof that you can get any odyssey with the + in any orientation...something that was stated earlier in the thread as well.

All that information that I posted is directly from them, from their website on various application guides/battery stats, etc.

For instance, here's one, directly from them:

Actually I need to apologize to you, really, as you had taken the time to even call to check things out.
You called between you're original post and when I first replied to it.

No sweat Fred. I just feel betrayed by westcoastbattery

FWIW, my brother has an Optima red top in his stock FJ40. After 2 years he learned to hate it. Replaced with a DieHard.

I have the Odessey PC1700MJT in my 80. Single battery system. Very large reserve capacity. No complaints.

maybe i skimmed replies too quickly, but i'm a little confused

will the odyssey battery fit the 80 w/out any modification?

This is what I had hoped for when I started this thread.
As for budget: mine is pretty small.
Carquest has a gel battery similar to OPtima yellow, but priced like a red top.

I also figured that I need a gel cell for of road because standard will not last long from jarring/vibration.

Agree....had odyssey for 4+ years with no issues

I actually have a fairly new Toyota OEM battery in my cruiser...haven't had any problems with it to-date...but when it dies I'm getting an Odyseey and not looking back

Depends on which one you choose. I had a custom battery tray made for mine to squeeze the PC1700MJT in simply because I was uncomfortable with how close the positive terminal was sitting to the radiator frame. They are also very heavy and the thought of plastic supporting all that weight made me squeamish.

Your typical Warn 8k winch draws 435amps/second on an 8k pull--and will pull your avg 5000-6000lb cruiser 9-12feet in 1minute. Your 80alternator helps out at about 60amps-knocking the draw to 375amps and the net battery drain to each battery per second. The "standard" cca test measures the output of a battery for 30 seconds of crank at 0 degrees with the ending voltage of the battery being 7.2v. Some companies use 15 or 20 seconds and some companies use 32 degrees vs. 0 which will skew the CCA somewhat. Some companies like Optima just give CCA info--which is really only good for 30seconds or 4.5feet-6feet of pull.

Odyssey PC1500 ($270)- group 34 will do a 2min. pull at 494.8amps and be left with 7.2volts.
Interstate group 24 ($175)-sealed lead acid- 1min pull 625amps.

CCA and Amp hours which everyone seems to go by is such a small part of the equation in batteries especially for winches. Depth of Discharge- recharge rates to specific gravity of a battery- performance vs. tempurature- overcharging are all factors that are much more important to a cruiser application like winching than CCA or AH. Theres some great info on RV/forums -Car audio forums- solar forums on these various aspects of batteries performance in different applications.

In a nutshell the problems with the Optimas are fairly common in the car audio forums due basically to operation outside of their "sweet spot" or where they like to be in terms of DOD and recharging. I would be very curious to see what a 1-2min 6000lb pull on a pair of redtops or yellowtops leaves their voltage at when finished. And what their Cranking amps(not cold cranking amps) at 1min or 2min are. This might start to hone in on what the ideal operating sweet spot the optimas perform in.

Just a thought...

Maybe CDan can help me out on this one but does anyone know what battery came in the overseas cruisers that came stock with a winch? Seems like Mr. Toyota would have chosen a good battery(Yeah it will probably be a Toyota branded battery but maybe we can learn something from the Tech Specs).

It seems like this maybe one of the bigger battles about what to use and aside from using the extremely expensive Odyssey battery there does not seem to be a good 2nd choice???

Sears Die Hard Platinum

All the talk on this thread about Odyssey batteries and their cost can be overcome buy purchasing Sears Die Hard Platinums. Enersys aka Odyssey makes these batteries, Sears sells them for less, and have numerous retail stores. For example I just purchased the Sears Die Hard Platinum Marine Battery for $249 and it is has the exact same dimensions, and specifications than the Odyssey 31M-PC2150, which sells for $350 plus whatever it costs to ship 75 pounds at -- EE -- Expedition Exchange Incorporated

IMO Optimas are overhyped due to over marketing.

Here is the press release for Sears/Enersys.
EnerSys Signs Multi-Year Contract to Provide Sears Holdings With Long-Life DieHard(R) Platinum BatteriesREADING, Pa. and HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EnerSys (NYSE: ENS), the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, today announced it has signed a multi- year contract with Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD) to manufacture and supply Sears with a newly categorized DieHard Platinum branded battery for aftermarket automotive and marine applications. DieHard is America's most preferred automotive battery, among those stating a preference.
Beginning in March, 2007, Sears Auto Centers will be the exclusive distribution channel for DieHard Platinum batteries. "By working with EnerSys on the new DieHard Platinum battery, we continue the legacy of innovation that was established with the original DieHard battery 40 years ago," said Rick Sawyer, vice president/general merchandise manager of Sears Auto Centers. "We're confident this new battery will live up to the DieHard brand name and that users will be pleased with its performance. These premium-grade batteries are designed for a longer life than traditional batteries, offer increased levels of safe operation, can withstand extreme heat and cold, and are durable for consumer automotive/marine applications. The DieHard Platinum battery will offer proven vibration resistance to the consumer market.
The new DieHard Platinum batteries have up to 28% more Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) than comparatively sized spiral Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries providing much more starting power to automobiles and boats, along with unmatched reserved capacity. These thin-plate pure-lead batteries will carry DieHard batteries' best-ever, free replacement warranty. See your local Sears store for written warranty details.
"We're thrilled to provide this high-end, durable DieHard Platinum version to consumers," said John Craig, chairman, president and chief executive officer of EnerSys. "This partnership represents a great opportunity for more users to benefit from our pure-lead technology products."
The DieHard Platinum batteries are manufactured in EnerSys' U.S. manufacturing facility in Warrensburg, Mo, where the first DieHard Platinum came off the production line today. They have a valve-regulated design that allows them to be installed in any orientation, except inverted, without spilling and the U.S. Department of Transportation has classified them as non- spillable for safe shipping.
For more information, contact Richard Zuidema, Executive Vice President, EnerSys, P.O. Box 14145, Reading, PA 19612-4145. Tel: 800/538-3627; Web site: EnerSys Home.

Sounds like Sears was tired of sucking and wanted to play with the big boyz.

All I can say is good on ya sears , for stepping up.

I'm still very partial to my OPTIMA's.

Not all Optima batteries were created equal.

I've had very good luck (so far) with my 3 Optima D31A batteries. The one in my wife's cruiser is 5 years old and the matched pair in my cruiser are 4 years old. My experience is very specific to this one model, which as I will explain is different from other Yellow and blue tops.

A few things I'll note...
It has become apparent that not all Optimas are constructed the same way. The consumer ones readily available appear to be less than stellar. This would be the Red tops, most of the Yellow Tops and most of the Blue Tops.

To my understanding...
When you get into the Yellow & Blue tops, they're the same battery from one color to the other, just with different post options. The Y&B batteries are a blend of deep cycle and deep/start batteries. There are a few that are meant for industrial applications. These are more (becoming stupid) expensive.

As far as I can tell, of all of the batteries listed on the Optima site, only the D31A, D31T, M31 are listed with 2 year warranties. These are listed as dual purpose start/deep cycle. The T version is a screw terminal. These '31' series appear to be a different animal. They are warrantied twice as long, are listed for start & deep cycle and you'll have a hard time finding them at anything resembling a reasonable price.

I like the D31A batteries in my trucks. They've served me very well. However, I would be unlikely to buy any other Optima version given the track record others have reported.

I have not heard of an Optima '31' dying early in life. Lots of other series, but not that one. Other experiences may be different.

YMMV IMHO and all that.
