I am Still unable to clear my new tires with the 1.5" spacers on stock width 40 Axles, and am looking into building some custom axles a bit wider..

What do you guys see as an optimal WTW Axle width on a 100" WB full Body FJ40?

no such thing..

Narrow trails and trees an issue?

You like sidehilling?

How tall are ya?

Cruiser axles are ~ 55" wide.

63 seems to be a common width.

I love my full widths tho..

Also, backspacing becomes important as well. a 7" BS rim makes a 63" wide axle almost the same width as a stock cruiser axle..

I was thinking 62"

24" to my Frame Right now, but im planning on lowering it an inch or so..

Trails around here are pretty wide..

backspacing is 4.5" 17" wheels..

Rear axle is Easy, an IFS Truck Shaft, Plus a T-100 Shaft puts me at 62" (Cruiser Center) (this puts the pinion pretty close to in line with my T-case output)

Front Axle is going to require custom 30 Splined Inners anyway, but the housing is what i gota figure out still..

I want to get away from the Scrub radius and extra stress from having the tires stick out so far from the knuckles.. and id still like to stay toyota:zilla:

I run a 60" WMS in the front and I put 1" spacers out back so the rear is slightly narrower trac than front. Custom build a front with LC center and 60 outers, it has been done;)

SO no diamond housings then ;)

Waggy D44 would get you the approx width you want..

FZJ80 front axle is 63". Plus you get a high pinion diff. Downside is figuring out the steering arms. Stock design isn't so good for Rocks.

im going to stay away from a D44, and FJ80's are to $$ for the issues with smaller Ring Gear and Steering..

yes a diamond housing would be :smokin:, but ive got some ideas..

I May end up with the FJ60 w/ Spacers, but im kicking around the idea of using a Rear axlehousing, do some machining and get some steering knuckles to slide into the housing. Im in the "Guessing, praying, and dreaming" stage, but i think it could work! :grinpimp:

Take a FJ60 axle, do the cut N turn but actually remove the knuckle (don't cut it off, slide it out). then have a section of tube created that will slide into the old housing and the knuckle can slide into.

Bingo.. Slightly wider 60 housing and no need to widen your spring perches...

Thats exactly what I did. Took a rear housing, cut it , flipped it, cut new ring gear notches, weld up old ones, put inner C's and Dedenbears on.

BTW trevor, i've got a front fj60 axle all finished and set up in the garage waiting to go in the front of the 40 ;)

fine so far. I intenionally stuffed the front tires and hopped it in reverse and forward to see and all went well. It loses oil at angles but runs fine. I purposely put the front up on stuff I thought it would not climb and just let it spin and hop and I did not break but got pissed tryin to get up some s***, I need links in the back.

axle width

Hey Isotel I'm gonna start a thread pretty soon on this same topic. I'm going to widen my 60 axles 6" in the front and match it in the rear. This is the look and width I want. I have the same backspacing on my 17's and don't want to run spacers anymore, so this is the only solution I see to keep the toy axles!

60 axles with 3.5" BS wheels would make a pretty stable 100" WB rig.

I have 55" axles, 1.5" spacers, and 3" BS wheels. My rig is pretty stable SO'ed with 38" tall tires. If you wanted more, you could always add IFS hubs and gain a few more inches.

Plus if you go this route your scrub radius will be nicer on your steering than the route I went.
