so i have a 77fj40 and im swapping in a 2f from a 87
they have different bellhouses so i need to use the one from my 77
i did many searches and found this was a common question
lots of replies but noting with pictures so thought i would help out others as i go
here you go
maybe a bit different for 3 speed

first you need to remove the tranny and t case (another discussion)
you need to remove 6 12 mm bolts that hold on the clutch

the clutch will want to move so i used a heavy duty tie down attached to the rail of my engine hoist to hold the flywheel from turning

not sure if there is a better way but this worked great

Curious were there lock washers on the six bolts that held the flywheel to the crank? On the earlier flywheels there are three plates. Each with two holes spaced so they fit bolts on the flywheel. Once installed you bend the corner up to lock the bolt in place. It's important that do get bend up. On my first cruiser I learned the hard what happens when you don't. PO didn't and one came loose and locked the clutch disc with pressure plate/flywheel on the way to work. Lucky still just had a three speed with no PTO yet. Still wasn't much pulling it apart in the driveway in the winter. At least it was a cheap fix for a poor kid.

For got to mention believe that is a 3F bellhousing attached to the 87 2F. Compare the two and you'll notice the later one angles the transmission down a little on the right side.

I have used an open end to lock flywheel to bellhousing to keep it from spinning. Put closed portion on a bolt and open portion to hold onto flywheel. Spin flywheel repeat. Or small pry bar wedged into clutch side opening spin repeat, or small impact works as well. More important to keep it from spinning when reinstalling clutch. Hardest part of this job for me has always been pilot bearing removal. I have a castle bolt that has been ground down to fit my slide hammer somewhere.

3f bellhousing should also have a bit of clearance to fit bearing nose cone differences for h55f. If using 2f bellhousing with h55 will need minor clearance with grinder

I will add that I've used a 12" 3/8" extension to rotate the flywheel. Around the edge there are holes the male end of extension fits in.
