No one can say you haven't got your money's worth out of this engine!

Or this truck! She just rolled over 364,000 miles. Still love the truck. Just hate the engine right now. Going to tear into it this weekend.

How many miles on that fancy DOA 22RE?

About 165K

The million dollar question: is there a bellhousing to mate the 3RZ to your R151F? It seems like you have a lot invetsted in your tranny/tcases. You could always rebuild the 22RE. If it was me I would rebuild it to a 22RTE and Megaqquirt it. Megasquirt has a plug-n-play unit that will swap right out with your factory ECU, and replace the MAF with a MAP a 40 minute install, with plenty of base maps available. There is good comunity and support. With Megaquirt you could run wideband lambda mixture control, and knock control, so if you use that nasty Pemex gas, the megasquirt can use a knock sensor to automatically retard your timing, or even run lower boost. It would be essentially truning your 22RE into a modern engine, no messing with engine mounting or driveline mods:

Wow, Isaac promoting a non OEM solution? I think pigs are flying outside!!

This is the route that I am going with my 3FE and 4AGE. I love the mechancial design of early Toyota EFI engines, but the computers are so outdated, might as well have punchcards. It really makes it an easychoice when there is a modern options that will plug righ into your OEM harness.

Marlin has historically offered one. Currently not available.

Ready to Pull

Busy morning.

Engine stripped ready to pull.
Smaller boxed bits.
Larger workbench bits.

Now I just need to drop the transmission/TC.

Whats the path forward?

In a perfect world ... Have tranny off tomorrow.
Pull engine next weekend.
Take engine to Budlong that Monday.
Install rebuilt engine the weekend after I get it back.

That, of course, is without any complications, like the cylinders already at max bore and I then need to get a new block.

Matt in Placitas may still have my old '85 22RE somewhere there.

Call for Help

Tranny is out. Engine is ready to pull.

So, who might be available next weekend for no more than a couple hours to pull the engine? I'm flexible on day and time. Even if you only want to watch (we are an educational group, after all) come by for pizza and cerveza. I just need a head count.

I'll need a small trailer to get the engine to BudLong, and to get the hoist from Shawn.

I might be able to depending on time and day. Late Sunday (after 5) would be best for me, but I realize that might not suit other volunteers. I have a trailer and could swing by Shawn's to get the lift as well. the trailer will stay there for a couple of days, or are they there during the weekend, or what?

Thanks Steve. My plan is to drop off the engine and return the trailer back to its owner. I would need it again to pick up the engine when finished. And, if necessary, if I need to harvest a block at the U-Pull.

I should be able to help, depending on the schedule. My "red-neck trailer" (made from the bed of an old Ford Courier pickup) is also available if needed.

Thanks to Steve and Mike for coming over yesterday evening to help pull the engine. The 22RE is now in the capable hands of Tod at Budlong. As he said ... he builds those in his sleep. I'm looking forward to having a fresh engine and hopefully no more issues.

I heard from Todd at Budlong. As I suspected the cylinders have already been bored .040" over, which makes this block trash. In addition, it appears I broke a piston ring on #3 which caused the lost compression.

Off to the U-Pull this weekend to try and harvest a block.

Since folks keep asking. Official numbers:

Miles on engine from install until pull: 130,442
Miles on timing chain with steel guides: 126,691

I guess I can finally say that I'm not happy with this DOA engine. I think this engine should have gone much, much longer. Plus, the fact that DOA rebuild it with the intent of never having the ability to be rebuilt again is frustrating. I guess I'm probably an exception since I tend to hang onto my junk. For others it's probably not an issue since it will be long sold before issues show up.

One little detail I've mentioned casually is when I had the head off last fall Todd noticed the valves had been ground to a razors edge, probably to clear the pistons. This would suggest that the block has also been milled beyond reuse. But, Todd didn't measure it so I can't say for sure.
