Beginning to Hate My Engine

Holy Moly, that's not good. If it broke apart, I'd think you'd have found it somewhere in the oil pan maybe?

But how would it have gotten past the oil rings to get into the pan? Look what the top ring did to the piston when it failed. Unless it was in bits when the piston was pulled and they fell out.

In your 40 build thread you graded all the vendors, if you had to go back now how would you grade DOA?

This engine should have lasted at least another 70K miles. I'm going to pay Todd a visit tomorrow or Friday and get some more scoop on the piston. I want to find out if the piston had a broken #2 ring, or if it wasn't installed. Also, the timing chain should have lasted forever. My guess is he used an aftermarket chain that was of lesser quality than the OEM.

That, factored with the head on the 2FE, makes me give him a "D."

Started assembly. While I had the engine out there are several hoses that are a bugger to replace. They will be much easier with the engine in the air. Problem is I missed ordering one.

The only thing left is the intake manifold.

I talked to Todd when I picked my heads this afternoon and he didn't recall a miss ring...it may have fell out during inspection?

Everything but the stupid hose.

Jon - Any progress on "the stupid hose" yet? Hopefully that's not holding you up. The engine looks great otherwise!

I have it. Just need to get it squeezed in.

Lurch,

4Runner looks/sounds good. Saw ya leaving Starbucks this AM.

:D

Got it back together on Saturday and so far so good! Wonder if it will be the first engine with less than 2k mile to drive to 14000'?

Oh wait John might beat me in milage....you still planning on Ouray Pappy?

I'm hoping to have the engine running on Saturday. I would rather not bring da'40, but I can always put the new soft top on, and install the hard doors.

That FJ 40 looks rather beautiful

So close. Just need the driveshafts, fill the transfer cases, install crossmember/skid, button up the shifters, and get up enough nerve to turn the key.

Na. Mike and were running out of steam. There is still a few hours work before I turn the key.
