Finally got new tires on the cruiser went from the plain jane 265/75-16 to the 255/85-16 MT Maxxis Bighorns. I love the new look the street tires were an eye sore....Its starting to look like a real Land Cruiser

Only have a dozen or so miles on them driving home. I was worried about the highway hum but was really surprised fairly quite for an aggressive MT and the narrow tire drives so much better. I ran 33 9.50 15s on my Jeep for years and loved em. The 255s are basically the same size

Thinking about going this way myself - currently running 265/75-16 tires. THanks for posting.

I've been toying with the idea of this size too.
Possible to get a photo showing the width? Perhaps one facing the rear and one facing the front?

Look good. Thought this was educational:

Thx for sharing.....would you mind a pic from the front and rear? Wanted to see how "skinny" these look. I'm currently running 285/75/16's and keep considering going thinner when the time comes for replacements.

Nice place!

Here ya go.. I was really curious about the rpms at hwy speed. I checked before and after mph at 65. The rpms dropped 250 at 65 very happy about that I think the land cruisers are geared a bit low at hwy speeds.. No real power difference as the tires are narrower and a bit lighter than the 265s

thx for those, i appreciate it. the not-so-tech in me, i just like the look of the "skinnies" better; the engineer side of me appreciates this so i do expect to some day go thinner but not until i wear down the current 285's (KM2's).

that second picture with the bike rack post/reflector combo totally took me by surprise. scrolling down when i landed on the page and then BAM! i immediately thought of this.....:)

War of the Cruisers....it's on!!!

I love the 255/85 look. My cruiser had them on it when I bought it but unfortunately they were 13+ years old and starting to dry rot badly. Apparently tire shops can't work on or repair any tire older than 10 years old so that combined with the fear of them coming apart at highway speeds on long trips pushed me into a new set of rubber.

Out of convenience I went with 285/75's simply because there were a lot more options and a lot more availability along with cheaper prices. If I should decide to stay with 33's for the long haul I might go back to 255's, that said I really want 37's .

Before 255's

After 285's

Thanks for posting up. I didn't realize this size was an option until you did. You stated that you had lower Rpm's at 65MPH. You're old tires look significantly shorter so your speedo should be off of what it was, right?

So, skinny tires = better MPG, better in mud and snow (?) because they cut through easier, probably less road noise generally, lighter and easier for the truck to turn, less tire hanging under the body in the Stock spare position.

Wide tires = bigger contact patch, better in sand and on rocks (?), better in situations where you would air down (?), more work for the truck to spin them.

When I'm 100 miles from the nearest human or on a remote track that may not be visited by anyone for days or longer I don't really care what my tires look like. I like the idea of the skinny tires for noise, MPG, and spare location, but if wide tires are better in the Utah deserts and rocky areas I go to, I wouldn't bother.

Is anyone qualified to clarify for me?

This is a great question and I'd like to hear the answer, too.

I love that bumper, nice vehicle.

Off subject and not trying to hijack the thread but where did you get those sexy headlights?

Xenon headlights with the HID wiring etc came on the rig when I bought it. I am not a fan of the look but they are bright as heck. One of these days I am going to go back to the factory lenes

All of the above they are great in snow mud etc... Better milage ??? don't know yet but I will report back on the end results. The spedo was off about 2mph with the 265s and now with the 255s at 65 its off 4.9mph on the gps so it reads 60.1 on the spedo

I looked for months to find a 97 CE or 40th with low miles and not abused. Found this one with 155000mi and spotless inside and out had to fly and drive to bring it home but it was worth it. I was a 10+ year Jeep driver and would never go back I love this rig. Done a few mods with the tires rack and OME 2.5" . A little at a time I will get it dialed in
