and my mind is complete mush. Can I just get the MAF kit and be done with it? Is the kit cost about as much as other kits and of quality. i read in the description that the gear box and pump are rebuilt. This concerns me. Just to clarify I have looked at the FAQ and have done a search numerous times.
MAF Saginaw Power Steering Conversion Kits

Hi All:

$1300!!!!

get the part numbers you need from the faq and piece a kit together.

Is there a compiled list for these part numbers? I have seen only a couple of them.

i used a 1987 4runner box on mine with saginaw pump works great. cost;
box $50
pitman arm $60
pump $120
high pressure hose $60
and some u steering u joints from summit. had it on fo 3 years and no problem. i found out on my brothers fj40 that saginaw box has some oversteering on the road off road works great. he got a fj60 box now it works awsome.

By doing it that way were you able to eliminate the drag link?

Assuming you are trying to use standard crossover steering, it will eliminate the funky linkage that FJ40s use, however, it will still have a drag link, aka relay rod, aka the rod that connects the pittman arm to the steering arm at the knuckle.

I have done 2 conversions on my FJ40 and really like the second set up--

4x4 Labs Mount Plate and frame re-inforcement http://4x4labs.com/galleries/saginawkit/sagkit.html

Saginaw Box from 68 Impala (Can use box from 76 J-20 Jeep Pick up)

Saginaw Pump-- forget from what

4x4 Labs Linkage (Drag Link + Tie rod), 1 Ton GM ends

Dana/Spicer steering shaft (it's actually a PTO pump shaft--super beefy and heavy duty, and 100 times stronger and heavier than Borgeson/Flaming River)

This set up mounts the steering box on the DS front frame horn. It requires a moderate amount of welding but it is not difficult and well worked out in the LC world.

If I were doing another FJ40, I would at least consider mounting an FJ60/62/80 box just ahead of the shock mount with the Pittman facing forward. Then use a Saginaw pump, GM 1 ton linkage and a custom hose to hook it all up.

I have very good luck with my FJ60 box, it is starting to leak so it needs a rebuild. Will be a good time to set up hydro-assist. Running 36's in the rocks makes you wishing for a little more. You can use FJ60 TRE's on FJ60 knuckles (disk brakes and bigger studs w/large pattern) with insert in pitman arm makes it so you can use mostly factory parts.

I was under the impression that I would be able to get rid of the drag link. Anytime my suspension is flexed and I am turning the wheel to the left the drag link eats up my tire.

Are you referring to the rod that goes from the stock steering gear on the pedestal to the center arm? If so the Sag, FJ60/Scout will get rid of that piece. If you do the mini-truck route it will keep that piece. It may be called the relay rod??

yes that is it. Should I just get a PSC gear box since they are new? How about a GM pump? I guess the GM pumps have the pulley on it?

some would say go get the stuff from the junkyard and call it a day, others prefer to get it new. Personal choice on how much time and money you want to spend. How much of a hassle is it to swap or fix junkyard parts down the line?

Can't tell you in other words...

But the Sag will get rid of the rod you are referring to.

Thanks Bret. What do you think of the MAF set up I posted the link too? Too much $$ or can I find the same thing somewhere else considerably less?

Personally, I would build the kit myself. A bit more satisfying and you will know what the parts came from. Makes it easier to source replacement pieces. You can also "adjust" more things to fit your wants and style. If you go the Saginaw route be sure to look around and see how everyone else has done it. Especially the part where the front crossmember is cut.

save some coin and peixe irt together like stated above, there is enough info on this board youll be fine
