Hi Rohitash: my cell: 775-530-6176. And we'll be on 146.460.

Are you meeting us at the Starbucks? And, although I'm sure you see we have changed directions for this run, I just want to be sure!

Cya,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes, Starbucks. I saw the change and I think its for the better! See you all there!

Cheers

Dang! Lots of activity since I checked in last.
E-mail sent to Rohitash w cell #.
Truck loaded except for the Ice chest.
Everybody except for me is asleep.

See you all in a few hours. :grinpimp:

Not just you lacking shut-eye! A rough week kept me from getting a jump on it...but regardless I'll be there ready to travel ;)

Ah...you guys are not alone in your sleep deprivation. I had to instruct from 0700-1700 hours and then again from 1800-0100 hours. A brutal day indeed, but the idea of getting away makes it all better.

I don't suffer from insomnia, I enjoy it (Not really, but I keep telling myself that). See you in a few hours.

Ok - we're almost on our way. Should be leaving in another 10 minutes.

Wow...Ooo...Ahh: Times 100. I'll leave the rest to your imagination until the pics and stories start getting posted.

As someone once said: "Pity da fool thad miss'd it"!

6-Land Cruisers with 3-trailers. The Hundy group had quite the coup: Score! 3-Hundy's, 2-80's & 1-60! I think this was a first!

And, of course, the curse of Death Valley reared her ugly head: A couple parts and pieces were donated to her somewhere in DV.

What happened?
Wheres the trip report?
PICS!?!?!?!

K

I heard of a missing shock bolt... A little rain, and somebody said there was a heat wave....

Yes...I lost a bolt that holds the lower shock to the mount. Jereme lost 1/2 of a fender flare on his 80. It was funny. Ken Dean and I were travelling behind Jereme on the Lippencott Mine trail. We were down past the Racetrack somewhere when Ken said, as we were flying down the trail (the Hundy handled amazingly well with only one rear shock!) not quite in 'Dan' style but moving right along just the same. Anyway Ken mentioned he saw some old car parts laying under a bush just off the trail. Not giving it another thought until we got to Ubehebe Crater and discovered "the car part" might indeed have been Jereme's fender flare. Other miscellaneous parts and pieces either came up missing or broken on several rigs including mine. But that's Death Valley! You just have to expect something to rattle loose when you go to DV ;).

It was kinda bizarre to think it was cold & snowing about 60-miles, as the crow flies, to the West while we basked in mid 90 degree heat at Saline. And although I am not a heat seeker I have to say it was AWESOME! There wasn't anyone there really and the pools were soooooo nice! Throughout the day our group dipped in the pools and enjoyed one of our laziest days of any trip to date! Trying not to feel too guilty about our down time I finally dipped in after dinner Saturday night and watched the crescent moon drop off the western sky as it slowly was swallowed by the Inyo crest...amazing!

It was a great trip. I'm sure it would not have been as great if we hadn't 180'd our trip compass from Northern Nevada where it was to be cold, rainy, snowy and windy. You can kinda deal with one of those weather conditions but when mother nature flings all of them at you it's less than ideal ;). And we were after ideal!

Ken Dean and me in my Hundy, Rohitash & his wife (Ro...please send me the correct spelling for your wife so I can make this right!) in their Hundy, Dan & Joanne Johnson in their Hundy (keen observers have not counted three...yes count 'em...three Hundys!), Jack & Darcie Peeler in their overlander 80, Jereme Wormington in his sup'd up 80 and Shawn Waymire and his son Zach in their very clean V8 60 Series. Oh yeah...and 4-dogs spread amongst three of our rigs! After gathering at Starbucks in South Reno we caravanned to Bishop...all in sync via 2M! Rohitash and his wife started out from the Bay Area at 3:00AM (!!!) to meet us in South Reno, our trip gathering point, at 7:45AM on Friday morning October 3rd. Now that's a display of embracing the overlander's lifestyle if I've ever seen it!

After a nice lunch at Jack's Cafe in Bishop (thanks for the tip Ken on a new favorite spot to stop for grub the next time in Bishop!) we climbed up and over the White Mountain crest via Silver Canyon trail (thank you Andy Pollock for letting me know about this trail!). This is a mostly Class III trail that ascends over 6,000 feet very quickly: Uber scenic! From the top, in and around the "ancient giants"...i.e. Ancient Bristlecones...we decended into a very lush Wyman Creek drainage via the Wyman Creek trail. Again we were on a mostly Class II and Class III trail. The amount of water on both sides of the White Mountain crest were bewildering actually. But wonderful to see just the same!

From there we intersected the Eureka Valley road that took us to the Eureka Dunes where we camped for the night on Friday. Dan & Joanne had a new pop-up style camper and elected not to drag it up and over the White Mountains and met us at the The Dunes. This was surely the first of several good decisions by Dan and Joanne to avoid potential carnage on the route to Saline Hot Springs.

After Elk and Antelope kabob appetizers everyone whipped up their own dinners before breaking out the Pyrat's and Angostura very fine aged rum. This, along with Trader Joe's Triple Ginger Snaps and Madagascar Vanilla Flecked Wafers, has gotten to be our little after dinner ritual on our BBCNN trips: Not bad at all! It was fun having our own little taste testing of the two very different rums.

After a somewhat breezy night...albeit quite warm...we awoke on Saturday morning, cooked breakfast, downed cappuccinos and we were off once again. Dan & Joanne followed us into Dedeckera Canyon and gave it a valiant effort getting their "a little too wide" pop-up up the first ledge. Although a couple of us were rooting them on they, in retrospect, made a wise decision to 180 back to Saline Valley Road and meet us in camp.

It was nice seeing the trail from Eureka Sand Dunes to Saline Springs in the daylight! My other previous travel across this trail was back at Christmas '07 in the dark. A couple hours later we were pitching camp at an almost deserted Middle Saline Springs camp area.

...more to come but I have to go to work now. Damn.

OH YEAH!LOVE that trail that runs from the dunes to the springs! Its soooo frickin beautiful back there....The mountains look as if they had folded UP from the ground.Man I wish that I could have gone!DV is one of my top "HAPPY" places. I cant wait for my trip in 6 mos.Nothing better than the springs too, with the pools and shower after a long day wheelin.Sailine Valley is just an amazing beauty, especially at night, as you experienced!Did you guyz stay at the lower springs, or the upper springs?Just out of curiosity, I hope that the perch welds I did for Rusty Dans trailer held up well!?Cant wait for the pics!K

Just so nobody thinks Joanne and I missed out to much the alternate routes we took we scenic in the extreme. As I said to Joanne, I don't think you could go far wrong in the scenery department out there. The North Saline Valley road is a bit tiresome, mile after mile of washboard and cobble road, but overall better than mile after mile of interstate.

The trail from Death Valley road down to Saline valley proper is very pretty. Lots of vistas combined with twisty turny canyon trail. There is even an old mine site to explore. On our way back out Sunday we came across a nice size Tarantula crossing the road, and were greeted by the literally snow capped "Sierra Nevada" mountains when we hit DV road.

Oh yeah, I got to play Crocodile Hunter at Saline Springs.

There was a tiny little Diamond Back hiding by the pit toilet door. I fished a broom from the corner and shooed him away.

They don't call me Dan Dare for nothing!!!!
