The battery that came with our 99 is having trouble maintaining a charge overnight. It's time to replace.

My rig came with a replacement battery (group 24) but I was wondering what batteries brands and sizes would be a better option than the stock one.

I run a fridge periodically but don't have a ton of additional draws on the truck. I would like to stick with AGM or other maintenence free battery options unless a standard one is head an shoulders better than another.

Thanks!

I would get the Slee tray and upgrade to a group 34.

Costco. Interstate branded. Free replacement no questions asked up to 3.5yrs from purchase date.

Toyota/Lexus batteries have been working for me, 72/84 mo pro rate wrty.

@MattyO is the 34 better than the 27f that fits already?

I replaced my aging DuraLast Gold27f with a Napa Legend Group 49 a few months ago. Very happy so far. 990 CCA and 195 reserve.

I have 24F ever start battery from Walmart and been 2 years without a problem. It is cheaper and about 25%lighter than the 27F. Never buy Azone or bosch batteries. Toyota batteries and S. C. Johnson produced batteries are good.

Larger capacity/longer runtime or something?

The Slee tray allows the fitting of an Interstate Group 31P AGM battery (not 34). Whether or not it's "better" depends on the specs of the particular batteries you're comparing. For example, the Intersate that the Slee tray fits (a physically larger battery) has the following specs:

CCA: 810
Reserve capacity Mins: 190
Cranking amps: 1200
Amp hours: 100

The smaller Northstar 27F's specs:

CCA: 1080
Reserve capacity mins: 195
Cranking amps: 1750
Amp hours: 91

The smaller battery has better specs in everything except amp hours and is a drop-in fit. It's up to the end user to determine if the extra amp hours are worth the added work to make the bigger battery fit.

Search "AGM charging algorithm." Unless you have special battery needs or plan to plug your 100 into an AGM battery charger from time to time, I'd suggest getting the standard flooded lead acid battery.

Is it true that there are only a couple of major mainstream battery manufacturers (the small guys aside) and they sell to various companies that slap their label and warranty on them? Or was someone telling me stories?

I think that is true. I remember Exide, East Penn and Johnson Controls as being the big 3.

The 27F at Sam’s Club is worth taking a look at. (duracell label). I am happy with mine. The warranty is a little less than Costco’s interstate, but this was in stock at Sam’s (special order at costco), and CCA was a bit higher I believe.

Costco has 27Fs now, $90 special order where I live but I heard they may stock them in CA.

That's good news, thanks. Last time I looked they only had the 24 and could not even special order the 27.

There may still be stores that tell you they don't do it but I just got one, in July in Phoenix. It's Costco item #1131901, $89.99, which I believe is only $5 more than the 24F.

I hear nothing but good things about Northstar batteries. I'm planning on buying one soon. It seems lots of batteries, all from just a few manufactures. I've had a terrible experience with Napa batteries. Literally, 3 bad batteries (less than a year old) in 3 three different vehicles. YMMV.

Yeah sorry it is a Group 31, I messed that up. I went that way because I have a fridge and no spot currently for 2nd battery. I went with a Odyssey Group 31 and it has really been solid so far.
