Too far north. Too far east.

People come to Baja California for many reasons ... for me its attraction is the sense of freedom it conveys and the spiritual feeling engendered by its majesty and it's vast (if now rapidly) receding emptiness. I keep returning ... because Baja keeps calling me; calling me most loudly in the heart-piercing silence of its lonely shores and cactus-studded mountains. Calling me to stand awed, sometimes overawed, alone and fearful ... to confront it and to confront myself once again. - Graham Mackintosh, Marooned With Very Little Beer.

I think this says it.

Have you read Quiet For a Tuesday?

Baja is just the closest of the wild places to us. Patagonia, the Sahara, the Tibetan plateau, the Atacama, Interior Alaska..... all still wild, none yet screwed up with roads, Starbucks and quick stop oil changes.

So does this mean you're going back this year then?

Dan

Yes, going back to Baja. You forgot Mongolia.

Pappy,

Just got back from a week in Baja (back in January) with my G Wagon friends. Had a great time camping on the beach and checking out the cool little towns! Where abouts are you going? We drove from TJ all the way to Cabo spending several days in the La Paz area.

Rick

I will be staying north of LA Bay, certainly no further south than las Animas. All destinations on the Gulf side of the mountains. Four destinations in the "mountains," two or three beaches, and one night of comfort in LA Bay.

Internet Cafe in Bahia de los Angeles? Dang, they have a different keyboard down here.

I`m still alive.

Do they charge you by the word or something? That is the shortest "here is how much fun I am having in Baja" post you've ever made!

-Mike-

No, they use satallite and I get very tired waiting for the screen to come up. Plus, the keyboard is a bitch. Keys in funny places, and sticky keys. And as far as having fun ... tomorrow. I'm going on a hike with some LA Bay folks to a palm oasis with lots of rock art.

Mike, you will just have to wait until I get home for any stories. Really haven't had too much until yesterday morning.

OK, chased off the beach by high winds. Last night was a bitch and I 'slept' in the truck. Went out today to La Gringa north of LA Bay to spend the night and the winds were screaming there too. So tonight I wimp out with a room and a hot 'shower.' Of course it´s now dead calm in town.

Tomorrow I´m meeting a group from the LA Bay Natural History Museum to go for a hike. Something about palm trees, running stream, and lots of rock art. We are gathering at 6am and it´s supposed to be a long day. I will camp at the trail head instead of coming back to the bay. From there north. I was going to make a run to Mission Santa Maria, but decided I really don´t have enough time.

I will spend one night at Punta Finale (near Gonazga Bay) and hopefully get my chain back from Vaun. From there a wash camp south of San Felipe, then a border crossing. I plan on coming home Friday.

Now, yesterday. I was up before the sun to take pictures, but the sky was dark. I was sitting in the truck eatting breakfast when I saw something flap on the beach. I ignored it, until the gulls started to swarm. I walked down and the beach was covered with squid. I counted at least 35 beached or almost beached. Some were trying to get back out to the Gulf, but 23 didn´t make it. CARNAGE on the Gulf. The gulls had a fiest. By the mid afternoon there were 83 gulls feeding on the squid. It was cool watching the squid change colors from red, to white, to gray, to what ever. I approached one for pics and it´s tenticals started waving in a very mean way. Tons of pics. Bird of the week was a reddish egret. Never seen one before.

ñ¿ªºÇíéóúìèòùàá ... just some of the characters on this dang keyboard. And where in Hades is the delete key_ (ugh, underscore where the question should be)?

This will be probably my last post before I get back.

Jon -

Wild story about the squid. Makes you wonder why they would do that. Mass squid suicide.

I'm looking forqard to more stories and photos when you get back. Careful on the road!

Two pictures I've always wanted to take in Baja, but never have the camera ready.

I read the first one top to bottom before I realized you need to read it bottom to top. :D

Welcome back Jon! Are you packed for Moab yet?

-Mike-

If I don't unpack ... yes.
