I thought I had a problem with Equal tire balancing crap but I have ruled out blaming Equal.

The vehicle rides smooth when driving on a straight away, at hwy speed, but when I would turn the steering wheel to make a slight turn (at hwy speed) the steering wheel would shake.
I called Equal and they said its not their product that is causing the problem. They blame it on the tires or suspension.
I checked the wheel bearings and they are tight.
I swapped the left side tires forword to rear. It still shook.
I swaped the right side and the shaking stopped.
I had a tire shop remove the tire and check it. It looked ok. He then reomved the Equal and balanced the tire on his Snapon Balancing machine. I doesn't have a hood so he could watch the tire spin. I balanced and spun ok. 1/2 oz on the inside rim.
I put it on the right front and the steering wheel would shake.

The problem is that it doesn't shake all the time. It comes and goes. More so when accelerating while going up a slight hill and braking going down hill. It will some times shake on curves and straightaways.
I put the tire back on the rear and I can't get the steering wheel to shake.

Could this be a tire problem or could there be a problem with my rim?

Kurt,

I had an egg-shaped tyre once. It shook all the time but it was really out of round. You might have a slightly out of round. Does it appear to be cupped?

What did the tyre guy think? They see a lot of problems and might have a better guess than us.

Kurt,
It could be either or both. Chances are if it was the rim, you would have noticed before. It's likely the tire though.

Are you running OEM wheels? How are the shocks? Tie rod ends? Steering damper ok?
How many miles on the tires? Have you rotated them previously? Could be the combination of a slight tire or rim problem coupled with something in the suspension/steering on that side in front.

New tires. Less than 300mi.
OEM Aluminum rims.
New OEM shocks.
Fresh used OEM springs.
Orignal damper.
2yr old OEM tie rod ends.
Tire guy didn't see anything wrong with the tire. He looked for bent rim and out of round tire when spinning on the balancer.

I called the vendor I bought the tyres from. They passed the buck on to ProComp.
ProComp says I must deal with the vendor and there is a problem with my tyre.
I vendor says they don't warranty mud tyres BUT they will try and get their supplier to warranty them.
PRoComp says they warranty defects in their tyres but I go through the vendor.

Thanks, landtank for the tip on getting the Aterrains

I should of just gotten the "mullet tyres" :whoops:

Had same symptoms from a cupped tire. Switched it from front to back and problem went away. Of course with only 300 miles on the tires probably not an option you want.

The tire shook real bad when I had them installed. I thought it was the Equal so I added more.
Its a good thing I didn't have the bad tyre in the back or I wouldn't of known that it was bad till it came time to rotate. Then PorComp would of said I wheeled them tooooo hard.

Kurt,

Eggshaped / out of round tires are common - it took seven Truxus tires to get four good ones, pain in the but, but the vendor [4WheelParts] said it was common and took the time to fix the tires.

My vendor doesn't want to help me. He says it would be better to buy a new one. He says the cost of shipping it back, having it checked by ProComp and if they don't find anything wrong with it I will have to pay for shipping it back.
He said I could buy one from him for for$164.99 plus $13.99 for shipping OR I could buy it else where (so he wouldn 't have to deal with it) then I would have to eat my tire becouse if ProComp can't find anything wrong I am screw.
I said I will buy a new one, send the bad one in and when ProComp got the tire he could credit my card. He said NO.
Called ProComp and they said that is what they should of done, I buy a new one and then credit my card when ProComp got it.
[:l]

I finaly got Procomp to call the warehouse who inturn called the online vendor and told them that they (the vendor) must do the warranty work.
The vendor was still a little displeased with doing anything except selling stuff but he did order me a new tire (I had to pay for it but I will get a my $$$ back when Procomp get the bad tire)

The vendor was still salking about how ALL mud tires are going to be out of round and not roll well. What an a$$.
All my Wild Countrys mud tires rolled fine and were very round.

at this point you can protest the charge to your credit card ....did that once w/ a vendor who promised an exhaust system in 3 wks.. ended up being 8wks and charged by card from the day of the order....ended up getting the exhaust and charge reversed on my credit card...vendor calls and in a panic ask for me to agree to put the charge back on the card.. did so 4 wks later....had to make him sweat a bit...

Had an out-of-round problem with one of the MTRs that I got from Tire Rack. Called them from the shop where they were being installed and the guy said that they had that on about 1 out of every 10 or so. Shipped a replacement the next day, along with a UPS label to ship the old one back with.

AHHHH! More 4wheel parts bull s***! That place is for the birds. :ban:

I'd really like to know if your tire is out of round. I have a set on my 80 and have used them on my truck/4runner and never got an out of round one yet. These tires have been the smoothest riding tires I have ever bought, and don't let anyone feed you bull s*** about it being a mud tire and it won't ride smooth...I got in a huge fight at discount where I buy life time balance. FYI never go to the dicount in waco, tx they are a buch of back country idiots! And if anyone is in san antonio the new discount at the Forum has the gsp9700 and they are great!

If you shop for the cheapest price I wouldn't get to excited over getting the cheapest service, that's what you wanted and decided to buy.

They were not the cheapest but they matched the cheapest price.
I am not mad at the vendor, I just needed to put them in there place. And I did.

I am getting use to bad customer service and defective products.
I just got done fighting with CIA Century International Arms. It took me 2 yrs to get them fix my gun.
Its amazing how writing/calling the right person can get you satisfaction :princess:

What about Dan. He is the cheapest and he gives x-cellent service...well most of the time

that is an interesting outfit to deal with too. Had a few issues as well.
Ended up OK, but quite a bit of back and forth needed.
They are not really geared to work with small individual purchases, by their culture. I had many things from them that were misrepresented. But I think more sloppiness than evil intent.
One of the worst though was excessive headspace on a FAL of theirs. Not funny! They wouldn't do anything about it. Did it myself. Now tight as a drum...
