A better guide to your build date would be your block serial number. Once you've found that, you can hopefully compare it to serial numbers from other 3B blocks where owners already know their build dates

So, casting and serial #'s are different? Where might I find the serial #?
P.S. The good news is I found the engine coolant drain hiding under the EDIC, so I got that going for me:eek:

Yeah, checked it out but no luck in that spot. Guess I'll keep looking.

Well Toyota did move around the spot where they placed the serial number on B-series engines.

Here's the spot shown in the 1988 FSM (but they're all on the LH side AFAIK):

SerialA.jpg

And the 1986 FSM shows it placed the same as mine except viewed between inlet ports 1 and 2 instead of 3 and 4.

(I can't post a pic of this location without first going to the trouble of scanning it.)

PS. I swapped the pic in my first post so my engine number now corresponds with the one in the photo. (The photo I had there before was from my spare engine which was too confusing.)

^^^ Thanks for this post. For haha's I checked out an old Canadian Owners Manual for 1984 BJ42's that I got off ebay many moons ago, which shows the location of the engine serial number. My rig is NZ or AUS but there it was, under the #1 injector. Funny that there were no numbers visible. I put a little light gun oil on the flat surface and the numbers appeared. Like magic.

That pic of the serial number location is the same as in my 1986 FSM.

I never thought of looking in the Owners Handbooks.

Here's what my 1979 Handbook has:

As you can see, Toyota forgot to even mention the B engine!

And here's what the 40-series LX Owners Handbook says:

This may be useful for H-series engine owners.

I have three 3B motors they are all in different trucks now and I don't have much detail on the originals:

serial number: 0627365 block cast number: 11411-58030 (transplanted to a 1976 40 series)
serial number: 0451989 (transplanted to a 1985 60 series)
serial number: 0641510 (transplanted to a 1988 62 series)

Anybody? Where does one find info about year and build date from the serial number?

There aren't really enough samples in this thread yet, but for fun I tabulated the results we have so far... this is all the Bs and 3Bs on the same chart. Surprisingly the Bs and 3Bs seem to be using the same sequence of serial numbers, which is interesting; I'd have expected to need different lines for each vintage of B, but apparently not:

Based on the above chart (which, again, is a pretty rough estimate):

0627365 - Nov. 1983
0451989 - Aug. 1981
0641510 - Feb. 1984

I think the uncertainty on those numbers is about 4-6 months, + or -.

I agree except 0627365 is a 70 series so it doesn't fit for 83.
That number also has the bigger rocker assembly. Some seem to suggest it therefore has the 5 lobe cam which would suggest it's at least late 1984.
Tricky eh?

Pura Vida,

Hi George, any idea of your build date? Maybe you have the oldest BJ40 on MUD? I´ve been googling to see if any 74 models about, and can only find mentions in Phillipines and NZ, both of which I think are RHD. Maybe they made the RHD first, would be interesting to know when the first LHD BJ40 was made. Mine was reg´d June 75 but don´t know build date.
