Since we are seeing more and more of these, and the well seems to be drying up in japan and Aus/NZ, I thought we should get a listing of the BJ44/46s here.

I also want to use the thread as a listing of build dates and maybe some of the interesting configurations for that year, especially with the fact that my rig seems to be an anomaly or test vehicle based on build date.

I'll start it off:

1981 K-BJ44V-KCY - February/March 1981 Build
Color: 033 Trim: KB01
Frame number: BJ44-002769
Stock with 2B, H41, 4.11s
Odd/Cool parts:
- Silver Dash plate
- Superglow System and 3B style engine configuration (vs B style)
- Vacuum Front Drive
- Fender Mirror mounts (no mirrors :frown: )
- Side step on passenger side
- School Bus Articulated drivers windshield wiper assembly.
- Stock Grey interior
- Headlight switch positioned for Tachometer (which I don't have)
- Stock steel fender flares on rear tub
- 5 bolt (vs 3) license plate holder on rear ambulance doors
- Possible stock blue carpet (fits too well considering the half-assed way the PO did other stuff)
- No sedimenter
- Door Dome light switches on front door jambs (not sure if this is unusual, but my 1981 FJ40 didn't have them).

ok guys, updated my pics, lets wake up all bj44/46 owners we know from mud like tobash, peteinjp etc.. and lets focus on jdm specific specs/details to see what changed when..
looks like bj44v,s rig is more in line with mine than breck,s rig.. the plot thickens.. :)

this was mine but it lives in Colorado for the last 10 years:
Luxury Imports - Calgary, Alberta
sorry, i know very little about it. the old mind isn't what it used to be.

I've attached the link sale thread for mine.

Thought it was an '81

-No Power steering
-Missing Fender Mirrors (any on got any- or maybe a print or drawing?)
-Roll bar's from a 40 (I'm going to steal BJ44V's idea for the mod)
-Fully fiberglass hard top that I guess is aftermarket 'cause it definitely doesn't go together the I've been watching Folkert's go together.
-Rad Top hose goes to driver's right

-Roll bar's from a 40 (I'm going to steal BJ44V's idea for the mod)

Look forward to seeing how yours turns out. Just to let you know with the roll bar...I have a steel plate under the body to mount the 2 b pillars to and another steel plate under the body for the rear. Definitley looks like you have a really good starting point.

RHSC: I think it is an 1981 model year and was built in 11/1980.

This makes sense too as you have the same slo-glo and rad hose configuration as Folkert.

Anyone else got a 44 in NZ? Mine is the first one i have ever come across here although i saw a Bj46 on trade me.

I just updated my info...

I looked at my plate finally and my model is a K-BJ44V-KCY and my trim is KB01

Folkert mentioned an L upgrade package... what does the K mean?

Last edited:
hi kraig, the L package is not mentioned in the Model name until 1982, when the LX package was introduced...

both standard as L package are named KCY.

I dont know where the K stands for, all models have the K in them..
I do remember that someone here on mud once posted an explanation of the version names..

I've been meaning to post up some data about mine. Also 11/81

model- k-bj44v-kcy
Frame no-bj44-0001873

Freeborn Red (plus red primer these days) with 4:11 axles h41 tranny. Rear full floater on deck with a cable locker scheduled to go in next year.
24V 2b split case. Had the chrome pkg- bezel and wheels. Currently in the process of eliminating the auto-rust feature. Probably will be a different color someday but not in a hurry. Collecting rubber parts for future restoration/refurbishment.

Had the red checked cloth interior like Folkerts.Rear seats have been changed out to safer stuff for the kiddo's (is my daily after all.) Fronts will be switched out to earlier seats because they are taller- like me.

JDM fender mirrors will be taken off and replaced with JDM bj mirrors - not the extend-able ones like the Fj's have. The fender mirrors may be kinda cool and all but they get in the way when you want to get under the hood and they are just dying to be beat up by branches on those less traveled roads (I often find here in the mountains of Japan.)

Currently switched out with 16" wheels- soon to be on 16x5.5 fj45 wheels.

PTO winch in the works-

Radiator has the RH inlet soon to be changed out for left hand in order to fit stock power steering.

Contrary to Kieth's info I have never seen an 81 with the silver dash plate, super glow or fender flares as stock items here in Japan. Not sayin it aint so- just that all the ones I have seen are not like that.

Having security token issues (what ever that means) with the pics so I'll have to try them again another time-

Best-

Pete

Awesome write up Pete! Did you mean 11/80 or 11/81?

Yeah... looks like my rig is a freak... I'd be up for buying those fender mirrors if you want to get rid of them... I have the posts and would love to have a little better visibility!

Folkert, your trim is listed as an LXXX correct? I wonder what it means that mine is a KB01...

Hi breck, No, mine is also KB01 (its on the Vin tag).. I always thought that stands for "Chrome"..
The other trim options were pewter or white... (BJ44V's cruiser has L011, dunno which one is that)

since you don't have an L package (where the chrome trim is included) I no longer know what that stands for, or do you also have the chrome bezel etc? Than it would make sense... :)
