In the middle of my axle rebuild/discupgrade on my 73 FJ40 using donor parts from a 82 BJ42 and I have 2 questions before I button it up this weekend.

1. The C-clips that go on the birfield (axle side, on the outside- not the spring clips inside of the birf). The ones I have are just a little bent (still fit in the groove, but not 100%) and I don't know if it's OK to reuse them.

2. I checked the FSM and it is says to use the Moly grease- I have about 3 tubs worth. Is it OK to use that for the birf and the bearings or do I need a different type of grease for packing the bearings?

Thanks,
Nick

If you can, place the axle retainer block in and measure the space between it and the end of the axle shaft with the C clips in, there should be very little play in there. If it seems excessive, get new ones, cheers, Larry

I misread your post, I put a bent clip on the birfield once, it came out and ran down the axle shaft, caused the axle seal to fail, I would replace them if they do not fit well, Larry

As much work as it is to get in there, I would replace the c clips if you are even a little suspicious of them.

are the c-clips from the old birf axle the same as on the later style disc birf's? They look like they are, but want to be sure.

Any ideas where to pick up new c-clips in short order? the local toyota in my town says that they have to get them from Cali. There has to be someone that stocks them on the east coast, right?

The Durablend should do fine. I am not sure of it's waterproofing capability compared to the synpower but it might actually be better.
