I was wondering where to look on the axles to find out any identification info? Is there any stamped codes? It would be helpful to identify potential axle purchases to see if they would have a fine spline vs course spline pinion. Also if you can get the Bobby Longfields for that axle. Thanks. Mark:beer:

Hi All:

Well, all pre-1969 Land Cruiser axles have coarse (10) splined axles at the differential. The post-'69 axles are all fine (30) splined at the diff.

All pre-1976 front axles had coarse splines at the lock-out hubs, while the post-'76 have fine (27) splines at the hubs. This change came about at the same time as the switch from front drum brakes to front disc brakes.

Pinion splines were coarse up to and including 1977, while '78 and up are fine splined.

All the above info is for US-market Land Cruisers - other markets may vary.

Longfield CV ("Birfield") joints are all intended for disc brake frontends, and are available either in standard (27) or 30 spline models.

All aftermarket replacement diff gear sets have fine-spline pinions.

Alan

Thanks man is there any easy way to tell if I have a fine spline pinion. The PO said they are fine spline 76 axles?? I have discs front and rear so I was just looking for a easy way to tell about the pinion. Mark:beer:

I think what PO is asking for is whether there is any way to identify the axle type without having to pull the shafts

pull the pinion nut and take a look...i have done that before

So in my case (1974) if i was to re gear from 4:11 to a 4:88 i would end up with fine spline pinions (which is a plus) would i need a new pinion yoke for the front and rear? Do i need any mods done to my drive shafts? etc....

You will need to swap the pinion flanges to fine spline to work with your new gears. I believe it is Cruiser Outfitters who sells pinion flanges drilled with the various patterns so you don't have to mess with your driveshafts.

ahh.....i see...yes cruiser does sell them, thanks:cheers: great vendor BTW.
