Sorry if this has been asked before. I did read through the faqs a fair amount. Are the rear axle shafts from a 1990 pickup with 4:10 gears direct plug ins to the 1998 4Runner E-locker diff? Spline count the same? I almost have enough parts to retrofit the e-locker to the pickup. I like to have all parts and eventualities covered so I don't end up with big delays and downtime once I start the job.

I do believe the spline count is the same. 30.

Yes.
Currently running t-100 shafts in an elocker.
All mini, taco, 4runner and t100 shafts are 30s afaik.

The splines will fit but I think the shafts are about 1/4” too short for full engagement on the locker side. You need a shaft from a 2nd gen 4Runner for full engagement. It will work and if you don’t abuse it you’ll be fine. I just went through this setting up a TG housing on my crawler but the widths are the same with a stock housing

The shorter is from an ifs truck, the longer I pulled from a 4Runner 1994 I think

This is not my picture, I have not personally had this failure. This failure was when using an ifs truck shaft. You can see the shaft didn’t fully engage the splines. The picture above is mine. The slightly longer shaft will seat all the way in the carrier. I took measurements with both length shafts. I don’t think a mildly wheeled truck would ever break like this but I’m not taking the chance. I’m running duals, bead locks, 37’s and locked.

I frankly think this axle length thing is nonsense. (internet legend)
If it were a real issue it would be way more common.
Those pics, to me, look like that shaft was bent and wallowing that collar.
I would be willing to bet that stock elocker shafts have the same engagement lengths.

But again. Just my opinion.

Yes, very well could be legend. I had the longer axles so i'm not taking the chance. I don't have anyone to campare to bc nobody around me uses elocker other than me and i was always told they were weak. When i started building my rig i collected a bunch of elockers expecting to break them. Ive never had a problem with one so they are all collecting dust under the bench

I'm confused. One shaft is from an IFS truck, and the other from a 1994 4R? The 1994 4R is IFS. I think I need some education here since both shafts are technically IFS.

yes, there is a slight difference in the axle length, I have no idea why. the 4runner would be a link/coil setup maybe it has something to do with that. I've never measured a housing to see if it is longer

Coils vs leafs.

Oh, I knew that. I thought the rear axles, though, were all the same 1986-1995

I don’t know if it is all or some of the 2nd gen 4Runners are longer

Id probably put money on it:
That 79-85 axle shafts are all the same length.

That all 86-88 pick up and 86-89 4runner shafts are a longer length than the 79-85 shafts, but are the same length whether taken out of a truck or 4runner of those years.

That all 89-95 pick ups and 90-95 4runner shafts are longer by 1/4" than the shafts taken out of a 86-88 pickup or 86-89 4runner.

At minimum, I would run era correct shafts in the housing.

One might say using an 86-88 pickup or 86-89 4runner housing with the 1/4" longer shafts will net you 1/4" more engagement. Necessary? Depends what a 1/4" of engagement means to you. The shaft should already have 1 1/4" in era correct asembly.
