I ordered a set from Marlin and realized these may only work on IFS vehicles. I don't want to open them just in case they need to go back. Are the threads the same for 40 axles? It's too close to tell from just eyeballing them, now tjat i have them, so do any of you experts out there know?

Yes it does.

Yes it does fit, counselor.

I know it's a stupid question, but what is the reason for the extended breather?

For water crossings. The higher the breather, the less chance for getting water into your axles.

When I serviced my rear 3d, I was changing the rear axle bearings and adding rear discs. That sumbitch was FULL of water and the ring gear was rusty! The bottom inch plus was all water. I have not cracked open the front yet as I stole the front "paper" gasket when I over-torqued the initial install on the rear service cover gasket and had to redo it...........

All axles have a breather. The problem is that with time, dirt and gear oil the breathers on the axles can become clogged and stuck open (the breathers relieve the pressure buildup) thus allowing moisture to infiltrate the axle. By extending the breather to a higher elevation there is less likelihood of moisture getting in the axle. The photo shows where both of the breather ports on my axles are vented. It is a 3 port K&N filter.
