Guys. For my beach adventures I would really like an awning on my stock rack. But I really want one that gives rear coverage as well as side.

I have been eying this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q4CQLY2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=A326T2IHZSVC14&psc=1

But I am open to doing a permanent one as well. What do you recommend? Any budget options with the 270 degree spread?
Like the batwing?

Roofnest.com offers a really cool domed awning at about $350.

I just picked up at Rhino Rack Sunseeker that was new in the box off craigslist. I'm really happy with it! It feels more durable than other brands I've handled in the past.

Plus the cover is black which matches my car so that's a personal plus.the awning itself is a subdued green so if you're not into flashy colors, this is a good option.

270 degree awnings are terrific. It'll all boil down to your budget.....you can find a used Foxwing or Batwing (if you're patient) for a few hundred or go all out and get a brand new Alucab Shadow (cream of the crop right there). The newer awning you can get the better as many are trending towards reducing the need for the support legs unless in high winds which dramatically cuts down setup time. Many also now have their support legs integrated which is really convenient.

I love my Foxwing but will eventually replace it. I HAVE to get the legs out with each deploy and storage of the legs is tedious (FIRST WORLD PROBLEM!!!).

That King Camp looks like a nightmare.......compared to the ease of any 270 awning available. You also mentioned being at the beach which guarantees winds and obviously complicates your setup so the newer/stronger 270's are a better fit there but pricey. My $.02.....

Good luck!

I typically do day trips and lunch is on the trail. So I really want to set up a shorty ARB off of the back since I already have a prep table on the barn door. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to install a rack that I don’t really need to install it.
But maybe a tent type one like you posted is a better option for me? Depending on how easy it is to setup and store.

Awning and roof top tent seems to be the standard Overland accessories. It seems everything I seen takes too long to setup.

What about using landmodo and build a cantilever 2-3 ft bracket that could hold it toward the back of the truck?

If by beach you mean OBX and the sustained winds over there on the ocean side, good luck. I've not seen an awning stay planted or intact. The Alu-Cab might and I'd love to see one, but cannot stomach the price.

I use a Kelty car tarp, works great soundside or when the winds are very light. Packs up tiny and I got it for maybe $70 when it was new (now discontinued).

I am in the same boat. I don't want a full roof rack but I can't find another way to get a small awning mounted on the back hence this discussion. I am leaning towards the King because it would it can be setup without the legs tilting the tent down it would provide some side coverage.

if you slide the farthest cross bar all the way back and drill to attach awning brackets over the rear door, it may work with stock rack.

I have the factory rack with 4, 80/20 2" cross bars. My awning is mounted to the bars with no issue. I could easily mount a short awning across the back bar.

Tell me more what measurement is needed on the cross bar? Did you use an L bracket on the back to mount? Or something else?

We went all out and got and worked a deal for an Alu-Cab Shadow. We're in love with it.

The 80/20 bars are 1" x 2" T-slot anodized aluminum. I used 4 sections to replace my 2 factory cross bars.

The bars attach to the factory rails with "L" brackets.

The bars are flat so they have a lower profile in the center than the factory bars. I use mine to mount my awning, my maxxtrax, a shovel, a rotopax can and my camp shower.

My awning mounted to the T-slot using the provided brackets and threaded inserts that fit inside the T-slots.

I'll snap some pictures and see if I can figure out how to post them from my phone. (I'm away from my computer). Or I can email you pics if you want.

I believe I have my invoice at home which has all the part numbers and messurments to order for the rack. Total cost was around $170 for 4 bars and all hardware.

Thanks that would be a huge help!

@subspd - you can find plenty but here's a recent writeup you might find useful.

Please e'splain.....what deal did you work????

We ended up getting it during a 15% off sale, also free shipping and no tax from the retailer. We also bought some other items so they shaved a little more off the total price. It’s still an expensive awning but we’re confident it’ll last.

That’s where I got one of the photos. Haha. Yeah XP loved the Batwing. Just wanted to get a thread on it here since our roofs are smaller than the 100s.

I can’t figure out how that Alu cab awning working with the tent mounted next to it....? It does look awesome though. I saw the other pics in your build thread.

Unfortunately our CVT doesn’t sit in the middle of the rack due to the awning.

I will be the doubting Thomas on this one. I was looking at my stock roof rack yesterday and the rear cross bar is at least 24” from the edge of the spoiler.

With the FJ’s or a roof rack you have it much closer to the back roof edge. But maybe I need to look at it again with the door open?

I removed my spoiler so my last cross bar is closer to the edge than your's is. It wouldn't mount right at the edge but with the width of the awning mounted to the facing edge of the cross bar (doable with 80/20 bars) and no spoiler, it gets pretty close.

To me the few inches of overlap insurance rain won't drip through.

It's still in the works though so I could be completely off...
